Jesse,

I was wondering if maybe we could do something to help curb crossposting, as it is both annoying as well as inefficient. Is it possible to give users the following javascript warning (or something similar) the first few times they post:

"Thanks for joining AS.org. We're looking forward to helping you. In order to have your threads responded to in the most efficient way possible, please select the most relevant forum for it. Please post your thread in one forum only, we assure you that it will be read by our eager members. You will only see this message x more times."

Maybe there could be a checkbox that say's "do not show me this again". I don't want to turn this forum into the DMV or anything, I'm just looking to cut down on this problem. It annoys most of us, yet I don't know if there's anything that tells people not to do this and it's mostly first time users who do it.

What do people think about this, and is there something we can do about it, Jesse? Thanks.

- Sean

This post has been identified as a 'crosspost', that is, it has been posted multiple times on the forums. Please post each question just once and we will do our best to answer it. Thanks.

Yeah, I understand that. I was looking for something preventative, rather than - "after-the-fact".

I'm all for capitol punishment for these cross posting types.
Nothing too severe, just amputate a limb or two.

To be honest I think a lot of it is down to the naming and descriptions for the forums as they stand (which I believe may be changing soon anyway).
I'll give you a good example from a *ahem* rival site. They have an "AS2" and a "Components: discuss how to create components with other members" forum.
So, where does my question on the Accordian component (MX2) go? I didn't create it, and it's Flash 7, but it's also a component.

I think this is largely where the confusion comes in and why newbies tend to crosspost.
We'll never stop it completely, but if it's causing problems and there's a lot of it going on, maybe it's down to other factors other than blatent stupidity ...then again...

Failing that, dzy2566, you and I can form a vigilante group and track down these scum-whores of Satan.
You in?

Where do I sign? I think perhaps my first act as co-founder of the VAGINA-COP(Vigilante Advocates of Getting Inane, Numerous, & Annoying Crossposting Off PCs) I will go into every forum and post the same recruitment message for our team. Yeah.

Mortimer Jazz

Funny how you got away with writing "vagina-cop" in this post and it didn't get censored, yet you wrote Moby **** in the other post and got edited for content ;]-

Does that mean you'll resign from your position as chairman of the Confederation Opposed to Crossposting Kronies then?

maybe he should have written moby penis.

Actually, the Confederation Opposed to Crossposting Kronies works very closely with the Vigilante Advocates of Getting Inane, Numerous, & Annoying Crossposting Off PCs. It's out internal affairs division. But yes, I'd have to resign, because I certainly can't be a memeber of both squads....we'll it works for RuPaul, but I don't think I can pull it off.

how about amputating one hand. I think that will solve the problem of incorrigible ones too, at least after 2 crosspostings :D

Dear CrossPosters,

You're not big, you're not clever and you are most certainly getting on all of our tits. Please put a stop to this or be firmly criticised to the Flash world.

Peace Out

JH

I had someone get huffy at me for using the [*crosspost] even though I felt it justified. Ironically, it was the first time I'd ever done it.

Just cut all the fingers and saw the mouth to ban that poor soul out of the site... ;)

I'm all for the javascript alert, and also, keep an eye out on people that do it. A couple of people have continued cross posting... again. After warnings too. I always try to put it as lighty as possible on new members, as some people don't know how forums work exactly. But if someone has 20 posts here, and still crossposts, I get pretty angry.... which I tend to do, unexpectly. But I'm trying to be a better boy :D

BTW: Just let me see here, if I can write this word... because I just figured everyone used common sense and didn't swear:

****

Oh cool, it blocks it out! I never knew that. Good feature BTW. The other forum I'm on would be full of **** if we had that :p

crossposting is a big problem. Look at this post, which you can find in almost EVERY thread, by some member named Mortimer Jazz :p ;)

As this is the last day to sign, I thought it was worth another post on the subject.

Yeah, that jazz guy, whoever the hell he is, he should be banned. Horrible influence on members. *shakes head* makes you wonder about some people

:p Theres a solution out there somewhere...

Heheh, I wondered when someone would pick up on that.

I hate it too but I think most people would skim over any sort of msg they get when signign up. The most effective way is to identify cross-posts the first time someone does it. I don't often find people repeat them after a warning.

as some people don't know how forums work exactly

And let's not forget the panic factor. Often people come here with a problem that needs to be solved right now! and so they post it everywhere they can think of.

I dunno, i'd prefer to be gentle with the newbies, explain why it's a problem instead of just coming down with DON'T DO THAT!! because aggression auttomatically gets people offside. And then if after being told why it's bad they keep doing it.. well, then do what you want.

But i do wonder if a lot of people forget what it's like to be completely new to this whole internet deal, and just trying to get some help..

well said jubei. :D.
I often just give them a link to the thread or tell them to search the forums.

One of the most sensible things I've seen posted in ages, and that goes for all posts, not just crossposts. Well said.

Whilst flanking them and then going in for the kill when they're at their most vulnerable is most excellent fun, I just don't see the need for rudeness, arrogance or that 'we're superior' attitude.

Check a vBulletin hack site and see if theres one that detects multiple threads under the same name and asks the user whether he/she wants to post. We could throw a warning about cross posting in there.

Or, if no other option, I think a PM or email for a mod or admin wouldn't be a bad alternative

well let's ask Ebola (or how ever they are called) if they are interested in buying a patent for crosspostings. I think this would get very expensive for those who still do it :D

(I think I should make policy! my solutions are always the best ;) )

Heheh, that made me laugh a lot.
They're certainly bleeding microsoft dry.

I don't think Microsoft can be bled dry. Perhaps drier, but still much more wet than I. Ew. That sounded sort-of gross. You get my point though.

well, as long as microsoft is the only one infec...ehhh... affected, I don't care.

Maybe there could be an 'urgent' forum for users with really serious and desperate problems.

I don't think crossposting is such a big deal so long as people only do it once. The Mods seems on top of things enough to catch a crosspost at the get go. It'll only become and issue if everyone starts doing it all the time..
