Thanks

you and everyone else... heh.

there is a lawsuit pending here in the states (so whats new?), against the major harddrive manufacturers, cause there is a discrepancy in the way the marketing departments reads the size of harddrives and the way computers read the size of a harddrive... when you buy a hard drive that the label says is 20 gigs (marketing), the computer actually sees it as 18+ gigs...

Would that be the reason my new computer only reads 110 GBs when in fact its 120 GB?

thats not the only reason why the hard drives see less than the amount quoted by marketing, when formatting information is put on (i.e when harddrive format), its not read as actual data on the disk. so if it takes 3 gigs worth of information to format the 130 gig disk, the computer will see the disk as 127 gigs (minus the way the marketing guys put a gig as 1000 instead of 1024, a meg as 1000k instead of 1024k, and so on.....)

the reason why they do it is legitt (i.e. dont want to confuse or intimidate anyone) and there is small print on all the devices actaully says that a computer megabyte is actually larger....

and the device would still be 120 gigs by their measurements.

wonder how this one is going to turn out
