This is driving me nuts. I have a fla with a graphic which is a button. I would like to swap that graphic out and replace with another, yet have the button retain all its properties. Is there a way to do this? I just can't get it to happen.

Double click the button so that you are into where the graphic resides.
Select the graphic (it must be a graphic symbol).
Right click.
Choose Swap Symbol from the menu.
Locate your new graphic (also must be a graphic symbol).
Double click th enew grahic.
And that is it.

Thanks, nathang. When I double click the graphic and then right click, I get a menu that includes cut, copy, paste, etc., but no 'swap' option. If I locate the symbol in the library and right click it, under propeties it shows up as a 'button'.

Okay.
First of all, are you dealing with a symbol? Please excuse me if you are familiar with this. If you select your graphic and press F8 you get a menu that asks if you want to create a Movie Clip, a Button, or a Graphic Symbol.
Those three things are capable of "swapping". You cannot swap anything in your library or that you have imported, until it is converted to a symbol.
Out of practice I import my graphics and right away convert them to graphic symbols.

Thanks again for taking the trouble to help. Yes, it was a symbol. I tried to step through what you suggested, and this time I got what I wanted. When I selected the button, I noticed that on the properties panel there was a button for swap, and this did the job. Thanks!

How can you swap symbols with actionscript?
I tried to use built in objects _startdrag _dragtarget but The biggest problem was building the button functionality before the button manipulation functionality. The intention was to swap buttons out and replace with another, yet have the button retain all its properties. The properties are unique to each button and will shift when swapped.
Please help
