I found a site that has a very similar animation effect to what I'm trying to create, and I have no idea how they did it.
The site can be found here : http://512kb.net/flash5.htm
The very first set of animations in that video inculde thick animated lines that curve. I assume that would be very simple to do. However, just following those animations, the lines split and "fill" a circular design. I can't think of an easy way to do this.
On a side note, I tried doing this with masks and it made my .swf file huge. The filesize on that site totals just over 4,000 kb (4 megs), which is rather large, but that's *with* the soundtrack (music) included and all of those other insane animations. How did they accomplish this?
I've seen other asian sites that do similar things with ideographs, where each stroke of the symbol or ideograph is written one at a time, and has a complex background, yet the animations for each stroke are very smooth.
Again, the only way I can think of doing this is with a mask, but masked animations make huge file sizes.
Any ideas?
