populating dataset component

is there an efficient way to use either an object or a multidimensional array to populate a dataset as a dataProvider with more than one item (rows from a mysql query)?

my three fields are: id, firstname, and lastname.

Most likely for AS2.0 you will want to expose your data through a web service using the WebServiceConnector. You can bind the result array from the web service to a DataSet.
