I have a simple question, if I were to import an image say a (.png or bmp or gif... etc.) into flash mx. will this image degrade upon publishing time after time... the same way a jpg does if you save multiple times...?

It depends.
There's jpeg compression in the publish settings, settings in the library, not to mention the inherent differences between jpegs and pngs.

annexion thank you... but,
I guess what i meant was, in photoshop you can save a .psd file a thousand times without any quality loss. Does this hold true in flash in regards to imported images and publishing/saving regardless of the imported image...?

Gotcha, I see what you mean now.
No matter how many times you publish the image will be the same quality, or less if you set the publish settings that way, each time. The image is stored in the FLA as an exact copy of the file you imported, only when you change publish settings and such does it degrade.
I was thinking you meant when you publish once, at any point in time, does the image become degraded.

That's cool, I didn't think it would degrade each time getting progressively worse in quality but I just wasn't sure.
Thanks for the clarification... I appologize for any confusion I may have caused.

Nope, not a problem at all. We've all been accused of having misunderstandings here. It helps exemplify how human us forumsters really are.
Welcome to the forums too, by the way.
