Can anyone tell me how to call folder/directory names from a network and display them in a flash movy such that the movie displays the status of several folders at one time.

Flash can not do this by itself. You need a serverside script to see what is on the server. Php, asp or cgi (depending on what your server supports) can probably do this ( I have only done this with filenames on the server ).

Its a network of PC's (beginner stuff) so there is no server as such. I am VERY new to this. If I could have a movie list the subdirectories of e.g. My Documents(locally) I could get started. I have seen that it is possible to load dynamic text but not folder names??

Hey bea_ker2
I think this is quite impossible for flash.
as ana lternative you can do 1 on 2 things :
- either use DIRECTOR (which i don't know a thing about but I'm quite sure it can do the job!!)
- or you can use VB or C or something like that & integrate your movie with an application made by whatever tool you choose to use using the fscommand (& i can help in this coz i know a bit or 2 about VB ;) )
So make up your mind & let us know here.

Do you have a VB tool that can do this? I know nothing of VB.
Anyone else know how I can do this using flash

I am not aware of any VB 'Utility'...
You can get Visual Basic or Visual Studio from the Microsoft's site though... They probably have some trial version you could try... Not sure of any other things though...

I've seen a tutorial over kirupa.com that handels the topic of passing variables between VB & Flash.
Check it here (http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/flashvb.htm)
i guess with some more VB you can do what you want ;)

Since I know Nothing of VB, Does anyone want to do this for me in exchange for cash/Paypal? Here's what I need.
I need a utility which can monitor the contents of directories(about 6) on a network of computers and display them live in a flash movie. I want to display the sub directory names only(not contents) of which there will be a few only at any one time.
Please send me a Private message if you need more info before telling me how much.
Am I allowed to do this on this Forum. Sry if not.

Um... What do you want from me, bassouma86??? ;)
I don't think there is anything wrong with the 'helping thread' becoming 'help me and I'll pay you thread'... Of course, it'd be wise thing for bea_ker2 to post this opportunity to the Employment section and have people contact him so that he could find out how and when the project can be done with $$$... But if he doesn't want to take time to go through that and wants to find somebody to take care of the 'little' job of his, then I say it's gotta be okay as long as somebody like bassouma86 can take care of the job... Maybe if nobody is taking the offer, then bea_ker2 should be really using the Employment section to find the developer to do that...
I don't think what I just replied could or could not help you... The bottom line is that it's okay to help somebody with 'thank you' at the end of the line, but it also is okay to help somebody with some extra $$$... It won't hurt you ro forum... ;) But that's just my 'own' thought about this matter... So, read it and interprete it however you want it to be... ;)
