i reconnected all the cables to the new drive, exactly as they were on the old drive but windows (98) won't detect it. (i realize it's christmas eve but such activities keep me away from my insane family.)
any help? should i be doing something in the bios?

Howdy... ;)
Um... The only thing I can think of is the jumper that sets master/slave of the drive...
If you are installing the brand new drive, check out how the jumper was set for your old drive... It probably is set to the slave... and set the jumper of the new drive to whatever it is in the old drive and see if that works... ;)
If you have no idea on how to set the jumper switch and what it is, then you should read the manual first... Most of the manuals should have those information... If that is not the case, then go to one of those hard drive company's support section and search for the jumper setting information... That's identical information...
If that doesn't help you much, bring your computer out to the yard and get the hammer out of the garage... Start smacking the computer until you hear somebody coming out from the party of the insane family... and just tell him that you just don't feel like to play with the computer today... and I am sure that most of your insane family will leave you alone from now on... :D

Well... I think the last solution with the hammer should get you away from them at least for a couple of days... :D
