I was noticing that a few people on the site do 3D work or at least know a bit about it. Also, I'm sure there are a bunch of gamers. I've noticed people mention modding, etc. Colin said that he does mod's for Halo. I figure there are probably a bunch of people on the site that do at least one or the other. and I was just wondering who and what? I'll start. :D

I went to school for Maya. I mostly like to model things and do shading and lighting - don't like animating too much, though. I've since learned various 3d packages at various levels of ability, but my favorite is still maya.

I haven't modded any games lately (Halo sounds like fun), but I used to do a bunch of stuff in Quake III when I was in school. I also did a bit of stuff in Unreal through UT 2k3.

Hmmm... now that I think about it, AS.org character models for QIII would be fun - Shooting a rocket launcher at a giant martini olive :p Anyone else go to school for 3d or do game mods?

3D was one of the first things I started playing around with on my computer. I couldn't afford to buy any "real" 3D software so I used POV-ray a free 3D renderer. There weren't any modelers for POV-ray at the time (at least none I could afford) so all my models were created with handwritten code (sort of like drawing with the Flash API) and looked pretty bizarre, odd constructions of geometric primitives with brightly colored (garish) procedural textures. Then one day I sprang for a new modeler called "Moray" which actually let me see my models before I spent a day and a half rendering a preview of them... talk about "high-tech".

One of the first things I modeled with Moray was this rose (http://www.pixelwit.com/temp/ROSEVASE.jpg) which at the time caused a little bit of a stir on the Compuserve graphics forum because it was one of the first few natural models to look half way close to real done by an amateur.

Anyway, I eventually got a job working with Quark and Photoshop and forgot all about the world of 3D. And then a couple years after all that I saw this magical thing called Flash...

POV-ray is THE real 3D program... All the other programs simply do the programming and calculating for you...:p
