How?... I've found the threads here dealing with the general styles, and figured out how to get rid of / change the background color and border of the textArea, but how about the scrollbar itself?....
I've tried searching in help, but not found anything yet, but I might not be using the right terms.
thanks!

Search on Component Themes. Flash Help has some info there but not so great to my dismay. Ultrashock has a couple tutorials on components as well...
From my playing around with components over the last month or so I would suggest you avoid them at all costs. They are mostly a pain in the butt.
Cheers!

I am in the exact same predicament. Trying to find a way to edit the appearance of the scrollbar for the TextArea component and can't seem to find any useful info online.
If you ever find an answer to this pls let me know.....

I have found a solution!
It may not be the prettiest method but it seems to work for my situation. I pieced this technique together from a bunch of info scraps scattered across the net. The bulk of it came from:
livedocs.macromedia.com/flash/mx2004/main/03_cus11.htm (http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flash/mx2004/main/03_cus11.htm)
Basically you find the source file and edit it. I made a copy of the original HaloTheme.fla so that I could always revert back to it. It can be found in
C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash MX 2004\en\First Run\ComponentFLA\
Open HaloTheme.fla and open the Library panel. Look for Themes Folder; then MMDefault; then ScrollBar Assets; and open the ScrollBarAssets movieClip.
From here you can play around and edit the appearance. I threw out all the gradient **** and created a 2D type scroller for my situation. Once I finished it I saved the HaloTheme.fla for future use. Then you just drag the ScrollBar Assets folder from the HaloTheme.fla library into the library of your new TextArea file that you want to customize the scrollbar with and voila. When you publish the file it will overide the default settings and show your new customized scroller.
Let me know if it works for you....
You are my angel, your trick saved my life and my job.
Thanks friend.
PS
If you find a better way please post the problem's solution :D

I tried to edit it, and it did something, but I just might now be doing it right. I went through and deleted a bunch of the backgrounds, but left all the names and everything in place. What do I need to modify? Do I leave the movie clips names and stuff as they are? Could somebody post a .fla example? Thanks!
