View Full Version : Business Cards / Resume: Paper or Plastic?

I've been thinking about this quite a lot lately...

Should we continue to have the reg. standard type business cards and resume on paper?

Or

Just have your portfolio info on a "mini" disc?
You can definitely flash it up!! :D

What are your thoughts? What factors are involved when deciding this....

we should all have chips and Harddisks implanted under our skin, with a personal portfolio on it.

...and I prefer plastic, because paper always suffers the McGiver effect (loss of edges)

I've seen someone here made a mini disc that his business card printed on its interface

I'd say both... :)

Not every potential employers will have time to go over the CD, but they sure will keep the name card if you give them good impression... :)

I personally use both. Attach the mini-disk with your resume and give them something to remember you by. If you go to TigetDirect you can get the entire mini-disk, shaped like a business card, for 180$. Its worth the investment.

shaped like a business card...will check that out...

thx Cota

Included in the mini-disk package is 50 to 100 business card shaped mini-disks, the labels for those disks, and the printing software. They're pretty neat. Definitely adds a new spin to business cards.

Just a quick note on the mini-disc thing: if you insert one into certain models of disc drives, they get stuck in the drive and you have to bring your machine in to get it out. My old art director did that to his Mac way back when mini-discs first appeared. That was a bad day (glad it wasn't my business card!)

Hehe... That sounds like a fun day... :)
One of my friend actually makes living by creating the business card CD, and he never mentioned that sort of 'hiccups' to me... Hm... Gotta go kick his butt... :)

I personally have never had the problem. But I have learned one very important lesson about those business card CD's, they hurt like a b*tch. If you throw them just right they break skin, god bless friends!

Hm... Practicing to become a Ninja, Cota???
Why do you throw out the business card??? :D

Cota

I dont know....guess thats what happens when you take a few programmers in a big office and let them play video games during work hours.

I guess there is more than one way to leave an impression?! :D

Um... Can your PC still access a CD that's full of blood??? :p

lol throwing buisnesscard cds is indeed a cool idea.
maybe I should get some

I like the round discs as opposed to the rectangular ones, they look kinda wonky. I put them in a little sticky folder (origanally meant for floppy's) that sticks to the inside of a bigger folder that holds my resume and a business card. I've also seen these cool little foam 'dots' that hold all CD's too, very cool and simple (and cheap)

(they probably throw better too)

Cota

They still play with blood on them, oddly enough. And no, the round ones to fly as well as the card ones, some sort of physics at work there I assume, either way, I owe my buddy a smack in the skull.

All I did was put my site on the business card CD, with a few extra's. I would suggest making whatever content you put on there fullscreen, so it completely has their attention. Not too many people do stuff like that, so it really makes you stand out.

I've saw almost 10 shapes for these mini discs and none of them had any problem like this one
maybe the producer wasn't that good

Um... What do you mean by that, Natalie??? Got some visual stuff for me???

I think the hardest part will be making them to pop up the CD into the tray rather than they just throw it to random victims... So, I guess we are talking about good cover letter and the resume on paper along with the business card CD as well...

Using those CD's as a freelancer has definetly paid off. Most of the time the poeple you give them to dont know anything but how to play games on a computer, those CD's make you look like Bill Gates to them. Its all about how well you market yourself to lesser computer literate people, or as we call it, "whore yourself to the brain-dead legions"

CyanBlue
05-18-2004, 05:25 PM
Yup... That's so true... You sure will get a gig as long as you don't shuriken the CD to your client... :)

Cota
05-18-2004, 05:29 PM
That only happened once and there werent too many long term affects. Just some minor theropy, nothing a little prozac wont fix.

CyanBlue
05-18-2004, 05:31 PM
Well... Come to think of it, you should really use that shuriken when they don't pay you for what you did for them... :D

Cota
05-18-2004, 05:35 PM
When they dont pay, I go Tony Soprano on them. Besides, if I toss another disk at them, then they'll have two and I'll need an extra one and wont have it cause I tossed at the other guy and then I'll lose that contract then I'll go insane and then I'll go all Tony Soprano and..... DING, time for my prozac.

Hmm you talk about games...
What about doing a funny game and putting it on your business card with of course your portfolio.
Thus the guys could keep the cd instead of trowing it away.
Just have to do a good and funny game that's all... ;)

What do you think about?
I'm sure here it will work. Dunno if in US it's the same...

CyanBlue

Gotta go home... G'day guys... :)

Hello, I couldn't find you a pic, I checked the site where they came from (www.candisc.com) but nothing. I saw it from a project the company I'm contracting with had worked on. It was a round foam circle, the size of the center hole on a CD (so the dot fills the CD hole and the foam is what makes it flexible enough to put on and take off) about 1/4" thick with a sticker back that you could stick onto whatever you want. It was nicely done up for this project, it was a light cardboard printed piece (front and back) that folded in half with the mini round CD inside (screened). I loved how different it was from anything else I'd seen. (and having way too many friends that play records and hand out CD's all the time, I've seen a few interesting ideas)

what is the purpose of using that foam thing...?

Natalia
05-18-2004, 07:17 PM
an option for presenting small projects or resume as opposed to the typical CD in case

Natalia

Another usage possibility: think of it as extra centered weight for throwing them at people.
