i think i'm even more lost then i started

I had a question following the "http://www.actionscripts.org/tutorials/intermediate/relative_scrolling/rel_scrol_1.shtml'
---I would think that all this was totaly explanied in the guide--but I'm still having trouble gettting it to work.
I would think that my first problem was the paths, but I'm ok with path structure-, but i keep getting a "0" responce on the buttons for the varriables ---also--I'm having trouble trying to get the first actions on the maintime line to load correctly--it wants to just start playing the damn mc.
I searched before posting--so mabey someone has an answer to my problem---i've already spent like 2 days messing with the example--I understand 'why' it works --the initial setup of variables and 'frame lables' for direction--but i'm thinkin my brain is preventing me from 'clickin' the project together---
also---big thnks to anyone who has ever written a tutorial on flash or anything else---it does not go unappriciated---it's made my progression fast-and many others as well---

the file name is "crap"---i'm on a mac, so i had to put a file extention on it, so i just put .fla

i tried working my way through that one but the way it was coded is a little old fashioned and there's definitely better ways to do it. go to http://flashkit.com/cgi-bin/movies/search.cgi?query=barney
and try using that source. i think you'll find it works pretty well (and it has velocity ....fun)

yeah that tutorial is kinda old if I do say so myself :) I like the one at http://www.the-stickman.com/tutorials/ (Barney's Menu)...
