View Full Version : Help me win the Massive Competition
Hey, just wondering: (1) does anybody have a wonderful idea that will make me win the massive competition? (2) could you give it to me? :D

1) Nope... 2) Yes... Take it if you can poke my brain only if you think it is worth to do so... :D

I think McGiver's footer game should win!
A weapons Menu!?! kewl . . .
subquark
06-01-2004, 12:23 PM
oh forget it, McGiver should not win! I can't ever hit the bad guys in his game, it's obviously rigged! :p
I'm going back to Space Invaders . . . .
McGiver
06-01-2004, 12:32 PM
argh... indeed a typo! it lacked the w.

McGiver
06-01-2004, 01:57 PM
oups, yes, there are still many bugs remaining.
I created the whole thing on an evening, and had no time to change it since then.
there is also a problem with the rewind button too.

and you need to add cheat codes for players like me!!!! :rolleyes:
looking real good, I love your tutorial! :)

who said there are no cheat codes...

I'd prefer something usefull to do in my own site or to use it in the real building flash sites life (more like those in kirupa)
won't say more than that

(more like those in kirupa)Mmmmhhh... You're right, ripping Kirupa's tutes seems to be a good idea. Thanks Fara! :D

Hmm, not sure about that.
to be honest I think there tutorials are not quite as good as those here.
the "Web tricks" and "ServerSide" tutorials are nice, but the Actionscript, Flash and Photoshop tutorials can't compete with those here.

I'm a big fan of AS.org's tutorials but... aren't most of Senocular's tutorials at Kirupa? That guy knows what he's talking about and is pretty good at getting his ideas across. For that reason alone I browse Kirupa every now and then. (Nothing against anyone else who posts content at that "other" site ;))
Looks like StealthElephant needs to read AS.org's home page every now and then. ;)

so, if you win something, just remember this advice
:p
-------------
McGiver:
The tutorials here are the best ever, and no one can say they are not
I just commented about the probability of re-usable tut files or code as is
it's so asked question all the time (can you do this for me, I want to do....)
(like the Puzzle game that Pixelwit made if you do remember)
Looks like StealthElephant needs to read AS.org's home page every now and then.or needs to read the news letter
:D

I only found the sen 3D tutorials which are indeed very cool, like those that provide special information you normally have to find out on your own (like the Variable Scope one)
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to say many tutorials are bad over there, I just found those tutorials over here more useful.

:p
stealthelephant, I didn't start yet....i was planning to a tute on a code I had worked a while back...but found some flaws. I will need to fix it first. :(
Since I just graduated...so many things to take care of...man...what a pain!!
Packing, moving, file paper works, drug test, ...blah blah blah...
Anyway, good luck to everyone.
McGiver, that footer tute is neat! Would be nice if you add your voice to the tute :p

I personally want to see the AS.org's tutorials UPDATED rather than having different ones added... The volume is not really helpful when somebody asks question like this...
'I am using blah blah's blah blah tutorial from this site and the tutorial says something-something, but it does not work on FMX' or similar...
Or, at least have us to add some foot note with updated script in the original tutorial so that it could make people understand what needs to be changed to do this and that... Just my 2 cents of course... :)

I can do this part, but I think 2 things must be done:
=> Call Jesse and Strok
=> Call the tuts writers
both for taking approval for this
CyanBlue
06-04-2004, 09:36 AM

Can you PM Jesse and Strok to give us some response in this thread??? ;)

I've recently rewritten this file using Flash MX syntax: http://www.actionscript.org/showMovie.php?id=85 so if you guys are interested I can give it to you. I also wanted to update the tsunami tutorial because it's totally impossible to use as it is right now :)

To Pom: 1> Yes, 2>No... :p
Cyan and faffy:
I'm with you. It could be great if writter can do this (updating tuts). Lots of time, peolle suggest you some way, and you add extra stuff to your tuts or code.
I want this option.
PLS STROCK AND JESSE :) :)
All right, here's the tsunami, coded for Flash MX. I kept the same structure for the code (except that I removed the buttons to create them dynamically), and there are probably better ways to code it, so feel free to update the code :)

beautiful coding pom!
McGiver
06-12-2004, 10:51 AM
good work pom! :)
by the way, why is there a reason why _alpha in line 81
if ( getProperty ("text" add i, _Alpha) > 50) {
is written with a capital A?
btw.: I still didn't get why many people are still using getProperty and setProperty.
is it faster or better or different in any way to i.e.:
if (this["text"+i]._alpha > 50) {
(except the thing with the capital A of course)
farafiro
06-12-2004, 11:06 AM
@McFiver
think this was Flash 4 script
and for the getProperty() and this, it's how u code and it works or not
a programer prefer I think
McGiver
06-12-2004, 11:09 AM
well, that was what I thought. thanks :)
Believe it or not, I did not attach the correct fla *sorry* There shouldn't be any getProperty left in this one :)
And I think I have to repeat that I merely updated Joshua Davis' code...

We only just got all the entries active this week. The intake was massive (pardon the intended pun) and reading all the entires (which were of the highest quality we've ever experienced) is taking ages... We're doing our best to announce it before the end of the century!
farafiro
12-22-2004, 03:07 PM
I wonder will the results be announced before of after Flash 8 release?? :D
CyanBlue
12-22-2004, 04:01 PM
Well... That might be possible ONLY IF either Jesse or Strok shows up before then... I think they are TOO busy thesedays... :(
Moreover it's almost Xmass day and new year
and strok had his 4th kid.
We just need to wait.
Where is the problem.
We are everyday here and still for ages :) :)
I just hope this young man will win :p
CyanBlue
12-22-2004, 07:51 PM

Strok and I are both so overworked at the moment, but we're desperately sorry this hasn't been announced yet. The quality and number of entries has made it so difficult to sit down and compare them to find a winner. With some public holidays coming up we're going to sit down and bloody well decide once and for all. We'll be saying more about it soon. Again, very sorry for the delays. That's about all I can say :)
Hope you're all going great, gang. I'm missing interacting with you. So so so busy. But life is good. I hope the same can be said for each of you!! Have a great Christmas if you celebrate it. Goodwill to all!
Good to read you Jesse. :)
We're knowing that you're busy, hey it's Xmass soon...
Btw talking about Xmass, I've wrote santa to make me win ... :)
Oh, I just would like to know something.
I'm sure I asked you before, but I would like to know if you get the last tut I sent you (loading binary data from mysql to flash). I'm asking this because there was trouble with the .zip formtat first, and then I think you've mix 2 of my tuts (there is twice the same in the tuts page).
So just to know if it's in the competition ... with my other one... :)
Héhéhé
Anyway.
I wish you a merry Xmass.
I hope all your wishes will come true.
C ya
ho ho ho ho ho
(cling cling cling cling ... what? what that? You're asking me what's that? hey comon' it's the santa claus' bells :) )

Hey, Jesse... We all know that you guys are mighty busy especially with Strok who needs at least several more arms with the new-born... :)
As for the competition... If you want/need, just ask for help... You should be able to find a couple of people who can help you guys to sort out the entries... Just a thought... :)
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU ALL!!! :D

Could someone help me? I'm trying to modify Pom's code however I'm having difficulties making new buttons.
Heres my code:
MovieClip.prototype.createButton = function (x, y, msg, depth) {
var but = this.createEmptyMovieClip ( "text" + depth, depth) ;
but.createTextField ("tf", 0, 0, 0, 0, 0) ;
but.tf.text = msg ;
but.tf.selectable = false ;
but.tf.setTextFormat (tFormat) ;
but.tf.embedFonts = true ;
but.tf.autoSize = true ;
but._x = x ;
but._y = y ;
} ;
/*** Global variables ***/
numberofItems = 1;
boundleft = boundbox1._x;
boundright = boundleft + boundbox1._width ;
boundtop = boundbox1._y;
boundbottom = boundtop + boundbox1._height;
/*** Button creation ***/
i = 0;
pos_array = [] ;
while (i <= numberofItems) {
this.createButton (5, 5+14 * i, (i<10 ? "0" : "") + i + ". Blah", i) ;
pos_array.push (this["text" + i]._y) ;
i ++;
} ;
i = 1;
pos_array = [] ;
while (i <= numberofItems) {
this.createButton (5, 5+14 * i, (i<10 ? "0" : "") + i + ". Blah2", i) ;
pos_array.push (this["text" + i]._y) ;
i ++;
} ;
Also if its not too much...how do I add a glow filter so it would it would glow #00FF00 and how do I get rid of the numeric labels I see to the right of the buttons? I know I am a total newb in ActionScript but if you'd help me out in making my project I would be very grateful. Many Thanks!
