Gmail is free. Well.. as free as anything else on earth. Gmail makes money by placing adds in your email which are specific to the content of the message which means you have to "pay" for their service by looking at their ads. That's not really anything new, BUT...
Here's what the World Privacy Forum (http://www.worldprivacyforum.org/) has to say about GMail in their open letter to Google (http://www.privacyrights.org/ar/gmailletter.htm).
And here's what Public Information Research, Inc. (?) (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=%22Public+Information+Research%2C+Inc.%22&btnG=Search) has to say about GMail at their site GMail-is-too-Creepy.com (http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/)
The other side of the coin can be seen at O'Reilly Network (http://www.oreillynet.com/)'s (yes, the same company that produces some of the best ActionScript books currently available) has to say about GMail in their article titled The Fuss About Gmail and Privacy: Nine Reasons Why It's Bogus (http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/4707).
You of course can draw your own conclusions from the above information, but for me it boils down to a statement found in Google's own About Gmail page (http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/about.html#ads). It states:10. Why is Google offering email? I thought you were a search company.
Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally useful and accessible. For many people, email contains valuable information that can be difficult to retrieve. We believe we can help with that.
The main point of contingency is that your mail will be "universally useful and accessible", but to who? Right now their Privacy Policy (note: it's not a Privacy "Contract") says your email content (which can hang around on Google's servers for an indefinite period of time) is just between you, Google and ANY "government" with a legal claim to it. This worries me a little but the fact that privacy policies as well as the laws governing privacy ("Patriot" Act) are often written on water worries me a LOT. Google may be a nice shiny happy faced company right now, but that may not be true in the future. Isn't Google going public? Someone is going to pay a lot of money for Google and its resources and they're going to do all they can to profit from those resources. How will a Capitalist profit from your email content? Only time will tell.

Pix - In answer to how will they profit, so far I've read Gmail includes these features:
Scans the email you are reading and shows Google AdSense ads, relevant to the email content, whenever you read it.
Scans your outgoing mail and puts ads in it relevant to the content, so the recipient gets ads too (think of the commercial value of that step alone, how many billions of emails go out each day? What if Google could be sending 10% of them? And what if just 1% of people clicked on banners. $$$$)
There was other stuff but I forget it. Actually I read a lot of this stuff in CommunityMX's newsletter (ti's a good little newsletter that)

I think the most interesting point in that Gmali is too creepy site is the second one, about how Googles policies may apply to email sent by the user but make no reference to email received. I wonder if we can legally protect ourselves from Google keeping track of emails sent to Gmail accounts in any way. For instance those little disclaimers that say the message is for the named recipient only. I wonder if it's possible for Google, in their terms, to aquire rights to incoming emails from the 'Named Recipient' and whether we can block the recipient's name to pass on that right. After all, if I send you an email, I'm not giving you licensing rights on the intelectual property therein. I'm giving you a license to read the email, but I may want it to be exclusive and non-transferable.
I remember reading a similar thing when the lawyers really got stuck into the 'Forward' feature of email applications and what it meant for Intelectual Property.

Hehe I don't think you need to be. They are probably no more sinister in intent than any of the existing mail programs we've all been using for so long without worries. Probably just smarter. Targetted ads basedon message content alone should be a massive revenue boost. I meant, when reading an email from my girlfriend, I'm hardly going to click on one of MSN's "Find your perfect date now!" ads. Or at least, I wouldn't admit to it here :)
Ricod
06-29-2004, 04:14 AM
Since we all know this forum is a great way to find a perfect match anyway. ;) And then there`s as.org of course, when you can`t find that cute flashser you were looking for ... maybe I should rephrase that, or use a different terminology like "eligible lifepartner". :rolleyes:
The ads ... well, nothing`s really free anyway. So far it doesn`t really bother me, but then, I have no plans to alter the world or kill somebody or have great ideas to make lots of money.

Bringing up a rather old thread...
About the whole Gmail Ad-sense thing...you can block Google ads on any site using Firefox/Greasemonkey/and the following Javascript... The last part of the script was written by someone else but the rest was added and modified by me :D
// ==UserScript==
// @name Remove Google Ads
// @namespace http://www.google.com
// @description Remove Ads from Google.com
// @include http*://*.google.*
// ==/UserScript==
//Written by me, locates Google ads and removes them
var ads = document.getElementsByTagName("table");
for(var i=0; i<ads.length; i++){
if(ads[i].innerHTML.indexOf("Sponsored Links") != -1){
ads[i].style.display = 'none';
}
}
//
//written by me, removes ads for Google Desktop search, which I hate to see
var centered = document.getElementsByTagName("center");
for(var i=0; i<centered.length; i++){
if(centered[i].innerHTML.indexOf("desktop.google.com") != -1){
centered[i].innerHTML = "";
}
}
//
//not written by me, also removes google ads
var ids = new Array('aw1','aw2','tpa1','tpa2','ad');
for(var i = 0; i < ids.length; i++) {
var ad = document.getElementById(ids[i]);
while (ad) {
while (ad.nodeName != 'TABLE' && ad.parentNode) {
ad = ad.parentNode;
}
if (!ad.parentNode) {
ad = document.getElementById(ids[i]);
}
ad.parentNode.removeChild(ad);
ad = document.getElementById(ids[i]);
}
}
//not written by me
Did a google search for "credit score", which was sure to bring up some ads :rolleyes: Here are the Before and after...
EDIT: The text in the images had to be reduced to fit the whole page on one image but I think you can tell what was ads and what isn't...

how to use it mmm..pi..3.14..??
mmm..pi..3.14..
06-13-2005, 05:56 PM
copy/paste the code into a new notepad file. Then save the file as anything with a *.user.js extension (I used GoogleAds.user.js)
You need greasemonkey installed in order to install and use it, you can get the extension here: http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/
Once you install it, restart firefox then click and drag your *.user.js file into the firefox window. Then go to Tools, and the option to "Install User Script" should be enabled. Click on that. A window will open up with the details of the script, just click "Install", it should tell you the script was installed successfully. Now anytime you go to any Google-related page and greasemonkey is enabled, the ads should be removed from the page. I'd save the *.user.js file somewhere in case you want to modify it and install a newer version, you can't edit the files code straight from firefox, you have to uninstall it and reinstall it (Uninstall by going to Tools >> Manage user scripts) Feel free to modify it as you want, since I know some people won't agree with the mods I added, those are just for me...I hate to see ads about google desktop search but others won't mind if they are there, so you can delete or comment out my script if you want :)

More Google user scripts for Firefox, these you can just install directly from the page itself, you don't need to download it :)

Google butler is like the script I posted above, except on steroids, haven't tried it yet but it looks cool :D
the site admins probably won't like this advertised.... since they use google ads.

what does that mean faffy? Are they trying to say that XPI files are bad? The author doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, nonetheless a very interesting page ;)
In an article I read in PCWorld, it said that XPI files are nothing but ZIP files, they just have a different extension so FireFox knows what to do with them. You can actually save the XPI file to your desktop and change the extension to *.zip, then extract the files. It's really just a few files of Javascript and maybe something else, depending on the complexity of the extension.

I LOVE gmail!
I sign up to all my fav coders lists and get the mails sent to my gmail account(s) where they're automatically sorted into searchable threads for me. Absolute genius!! Infact, no personal email ever gets near gmail - I use Hotmail for all my assassination plots.
Besides, Actionscript.org have more info on me than Google ever will. Maybe Jesse and Strok are the ones to watch out for! They even have my location and a list of my hobbies!!

06-16-2005, 08:31 PM
lol, faffy...I didn't mean to extract the xpi file, I was just explaining what an XPI file actually is :p
You just need to click on the link to install greasemonkey (http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/) and firefox should install it directly, then it should have a note somewhere to restart firefox before greasemonkey will be installed. Once it's installed, you should have a little image of a monkey in the bottom right corner. I'll make it easy for ya and just post the script on my server. Below is the link...
http://67.166.34.5/ASORG/googleads.user.js
Once you open that link, go to Tools >> Install user script. Just keep clicking "OK" until it tells you it was installed. That's it...all done ;) As long as greasemonkey is enabled it will keep ads out of google.com
Eric :)

have one question, is there any plug-in or script for opening links in Firefox in a new tab instead of a new window (as a default)
there is a tabbed browsing extension, that gives added functionality to your tabbed browsing....
i just checked, and it looks like my work box does not have this extension on it, so you should be able to do this without the exension.
goto: tools -> options -> advanced -> tabbed browsing.
check: "forces links that open new windows to open in: option 'new tab'
select: open links from other applications in: option 'a new tab in most recent window'
here is a link to the tabbed browsing extension if you want to add that also.

looks like gmail is fighting back.

The way that article is written, it seems like it may just be an automated response to things happening on Gmail, don't think there are people monitoring what your doing and manually going in and locking you out...seems more like a safety feature than a punishment to me. But thanks for the heads-up ;)
I think if Gmail really didn't want people running Greasemonkey scripts on their site, they'd take legal action against the people who created it, or at least the guy who wrote the script. Kinda like what they did with Napster.
