First of all, editing swf's is not a good idea, usually lots of info get lost while doing that. That's what the fla's are for...
But if you're sure you wanna do it, then you could try importing the swf into a new fla...if it's not protected from import that is...
If the swf IS protected from import then you could try using one of the programs out there that tears the swf apart, takes the code & gfx and places it into a new fla...but I don't think there is one of them that garantees absolutely NO loss of data during the process...
If the swf is your own swf then I wish you good luck, if you only ripped the swf from somewhere on the net then I wish you good reasons for it, because stealing gfx or code [or worse: both] from other people is just plain weak...try to create your own stuff, even if it takes weeks or months...

Nah, if I were you I'd just start learning Flash and when you think you're ready then just do it...
NOTE: When you're done learning the drawing-part of Flash then go to the tutorials-section of this site (http://www.actionscript.org/tutorials.shtml) and go through all of them...
That's the best way to learn actionscript in my opinion...
Good luck! - Ruben
