I actually had the sam question as elephant.
But, are for example the images used in Barney's menu done the way you suggested Jesse?
Their quality is great but the file still very small.

How do they do it?

Ultimately FLash makes little difference tot he file ize of the graphic. The larger (in KB) the file you import, the larger the output file will be. I think you'll find these other sites maximized their JPGs in Phototshop and Flash played little part in the size issue. But I don't know, as I haven't asked... perhaps try emailing the creator's themselves...
