Default .html files ?

I have a domain name - www.myname.com

Why is it that the default file the browser looks for when someone enters 'www.myname.com' into their browser's address bar will always be www.myname.com/index.html ?

Is it possible to change this so that I can call the .html file anything I want (without using a meta redirect tag and having two .html files)

Just out of interest, what was the exact string you googled ? (if you recall) I had trouble finding what I needed.

For IIS : IIS default file name index.htm index.html

For Apache : Apache default file name index.htm index.html
