As you all my know Im 16 years old and I'm in YR 10 (2 more years until i go to University) I'm going in YR 11 next year and my Dad is completely pissed off at me because I want to do IPT (programing) insted of chemistery... the people who i talked to mostly answered me something like this "Your cutting your own throat if you chose to have a carrier in IT+Multimedia but do not do IPT(programing) in YR 11 & 12". I agree a LOT with them cos the scores i get in YR 11 & 12 will count towards my OP (a position that determins what I can do in University) and I'm sure that I'll get a very good mark in IPT (cos Im very good at it) but I'll proberbly get a just pass (C-) with chemistery... My dad's argument for this is everything around people relates to chemistery and that all chinese people knows some forms of chemistery... What is your oppinion and what should i do??? cos i see almost 0% in relations between chemistery and computer game making......
*sigh*

Man, if I were you I wouldn't listen too much to your parents when it comes down to which education you'll be doing. In the end YOU are gonna be the one actually doing it, not them...
If you're totally unhappy with doing chemistry then in the end you probably won't finish it anyway because of lack of will to...
Looking at IPT, maybe people who have done IPT in the past currently have crappy careers because there are simply just too many of them. This is no argument however because this could have changed drastically by the time you're done at uni.
And then again, if you really think you're good enough and you're willing to work and learn your naked ass off you'll be have a golden job anyway. Just because there are alot of programmers around these days doesn't mean that there aren't any jobs around at all, they're just a little more dificult to acquire...though if you work really hard and are really keen on learning stuff then you should be REALLY unlucky wouldn't you get a job...
Just tell your dad he shouldn't interfere with your plans and interests and that everything will be fine and freakin go for it and show everybody they're WAY wrong!

...thanks ruben... most of the time i simply go with the flow of whatever the person wishes and in the end they mostly find that they have wasted all this time doing something that they think is right but they actually acomplised nothing/very little towards what the wanted and that if they went my way they would never ended up like that... i hate doing that but that is just the way people are to me... (at least that is my experiences)... the only people left in the world who does not ignore my suggestions are the people who are on the net (eg: you guys)... but this time its something that contributes to my future.... AAAAH!!! its all too much

You shouldn't let people run you over like that man, it's not healthy. The reason people do most probably is that you accept stuff that way. If you'd just make a statement and not agree that easily (or at all) with the decissions people make for you then in time people will bear you in mind when they do stuff...Just let them know that you're not to be f_cked with and people (including your parents) will be more carefull with what they do if it concerns you...
For instance, act like an asshole and let them figure out why you're being like that, it's kinda unorthodox but if they having their go at your life (and future) then why wouldn't you have your go at their life. When they get all concerned tell 'em you won't freakin put up with them making decissions for you anymore and that you're old enough to decide yourself.
I'm not saying it's the best solution and I don't know how your parents will react (since I have no idea what they're like), but if you wanna stop this then you should drastically change things. Only my poor 2 cents though..

do what you want.... your future can change drastically at any given moment. i don't know what ipt is, but do what you want. i'm not doing now what i had planned on doing during highschool. hell, i don't know anyone doing now what they had planned on doing in high school.
your expieriences define who you are, what you want, and what you will or will not do. you (and me) really have no idea what we will experience and how that will affect us.
Hmm like the other say do what YOU want and not what others
but you shoud also listen to you parents and older people the somtimes now more then you (this not maen you shoud do 1 to 1 what they say but think about it)
what i woud sugest is (not sure how this is called in english) somthing like
chemistry programing (there are a lot of people around who can program and also a lot who can cemistry but just a cople who can do both and this people are emergencily needed !)
of course this is not the right choise if you hate cemistry but mayby the combination whit somthing else phisyks / healt what ever i realy think this will by the future what does it help you if you are the best programer but you not understand 1 worth what the leading cemistry from your project whan a hapens on screen
Spoken like a true prophet tg.....Your life can and will change dramatically, and in the blink of an eye. For example, I was cruzing along in life, enjoying my career as an under paid programmer, not really looking to move up in the world. I knew what I wanted and I was happy with what I had. Then one day I wake up to find myself a single father, raising a child full time. Life has a way of sand bagging you when you least expect it. Simple rule in life, just do what you do and not what they do.

My suggestion for you is to chill out. I'm Level 2 (Grade 11), if you're looking to get into university under a programming degree, do that course. If you're not quite sure, take the Chemistry course and work on your programming in your spare time, like you likely are now. I don't think a university is going to reject you from a programming program because you didn't do a course in grade 11. Just take whatever you feel you need to take, theres always instances when you want to do one course, but you know that by taking another course instead of your number one choise, you'll be in a better situation at the end of it all. For me, I have a really tough schedule this year, but I'll breeze through next year without a problem (Math 12 AP, Math 11 AP, World Geography 12, World History 12, Chemistry 11, Physics 12, English 11), and considering I'm taking 4 level 3, grade 12 courses this year, I only need 3 courses next year to graduate. Whatever you think is best for you, not what you'd like to do.

err all of u guys have a whole heap of reasons... and i agree with almost all of them. Still i doubt any of the reasons you've suggested will change my dad's concrete set mind... the reason i dont want to do cemistry is that if i do the class ill get a bad mark and ill not get a good op and i will not be able to get into any corses that im good at in UNI which starts a chain of events that destroys my future completely...
<please do not reply anymore>
Dont you think you're putting a lot of stress on yourself? Listen, that "chain of events" doesnt work that way. You get bad marks, then do better. One bad mark isnt going to ruin your entire life. I think at one point we all thought that way..
tell the truth, there are lots of folks out there right now programming with math, science degrees (not computer science degrees). programming pretty much requires similar skills as other sciences/math. so if you go into chemestry, it wouldn't be too hard to pick up programming at a later time.

You should consider subjects under three headings -
1. You enjoy the subject
2. You're good at the subject
3. You think you'll need it for a future career.
If it doesn't fit into one of those categories, I wouldn't do it personally. Choose the subjects you really enjoy and do well in.. and let the career move on from that. Why bother doing something you don't enjoy? So you can get a job you also don't enjoy? :)
That said, I'm sure your dad has your best interests at heart. And as people have pointed out, there's plenty of programmers with a science (and especially)maths background. If your only reason for not doing it is you don't think you'll need it later.. well, who knows what you'll need.
I haven't really helped, have i :) Are there careers people at your school you can talk to?
