file wont open!help!

i keep gettin "unexpected file format" when i open my fla file on any system. even my backup copies dont open! im using MX 2004 pro, and ive tried openin it in MX 2004, and MX, but no sucess! any 1 know whats gone wrong, how 2 solve it, or wether i should stay up all night recreating the lost file which took me bloddy ages!
