Library Instances and Action Script

After developing "Scrolling Text" lession I, which by the way worked well, I was confused when I tried to use the symbol created on a new scene. I drag and drop from the libray symbos created in this lesson onto the stage for scene II. I then try to edit the scrip for the main container "containerMC" and cannot do so. If I copy and pst from the brevious scene (right click on the dot in the time line and select copy Frames) then paste on the new scene, the action scrip is visable for the container. Oddly enought the action scrip is visable for the buttons in the first example but nit the container?
I am just learning Flash 5 but have been programming for 20 years. I think this may be an issues of understanding Flash
