Hello,

I was just looking at a site this evening, http://www.standishgroup.com/ , I was looking up software disasters and the such. Then I read, on that page, about them changing the name of projects because of the Tsunami in Asia. I don't get it? They knew the meaning of the word before they called their projects it?

It annoys me. It's like someone stating that all the Flash tutorials, on how to build a Tsunami based menu (of which there are hundreds), would/should be under the guise of a different name. People know the meaning of the word, they knew it before they decided to call it that - so what does changing it do, why should it be changed? Moreover, what harm does calling it that very name in the first place do?

Where would you stop? "Oh, no, no, you cannot call that After Effects transition a volcano transition, due to the Shishaldin Volcano eruption in 1988".

Needles to say I mean no disrespect to the families and friends of those effected, I hope that this common sense would speak volumes by itself.

Best regards, snapple

You are 100% correct, but the problem is that people, as a whole, are entirely to hyper-sensitive to everything. Another example, Sept. 11, which happened in my backyard and I'm directly connected to, just incase people start wondering how I can bring it up. Like I was saying, in the movie "Gangs of New York", it closes with scense of New York City through the years, and as soon as they showed the Twin Towers, the entore theater started buzzing. All I heard was "how could they show that" and things like that. Its much like the Tsunami thing. People have become so damned hyper-sensitve to all this stuff, that common sense took a back seat to politically correct.

Whahaha, well I get your point, of course it'd be insanity to change the name of an effect applied on flashmenu's or something along that way.
On the other hand, if someone would set up an anual event next week called "tsunami 2005" then I could imagine that masses of people would get kinda angry about that...it's kinda unrespectful towards the families of those who were killed by the tsunami...

Something like the tsunami-effect in menu's probably isn't something that people will refer to in another way from one moment to another, I doubt if there will be anybody talking about (for instance) a "menu-wave-effect" instead of a "tsunami-effect" because of the disaster that happened in Asia.
However, an anual event like the project-thingie can easily be named otherwise, no big problem and I don't think people will still call it by the original name when knowing that the name's changed...right?

...but still I agree with you that the people from standishgroup could've thought deeper about the name of their project...

 - Ruben

Yeah, it seems a bit over the top to me.. plus it's an internal project, so who knows but the people involved in the company? Either someone in the company has been directly effected by this disaster, and they're being kind to them, or they want to look like they're a caring company by making some token effort. I honestly don't know why you'd even mention it, unless it was the latter.
