Just finished a major overhaul of my photoblog world map.
Photoblog world map (http://www.allthegoodness.com/projects/map/)
Please test the zoom functions, both the buttons and the click and drag zoom box.
When you zoom right in you should get a high resolution map loaded in chunks.
The maps are very high resolution from DCW. Each of the 72 slices is between 20-200k. Are they too big? How did they download on your connection?
Please post any bugs you find and suggestions for future versions.
Source is available from the page.

The zooming functions are a little rickity. I'll share my map code for zooming if you want it. It has some easing equations which would make your map really, really cool. Check the effect out at www.emak.com. Click on the menu item Our Companies and then locations. It's derivitive, I got the original idea from www.ultrashock.com, thanks ultrashock.

Sure dotcommando, send the code through. It would be nice to add a bit of motion in. I spent so much time just getting the basics working I haven't added any yet. I'm not sure how the hi rez files will handle animating but I'll give it a crack. 200k is a lot of vector info!

zeman,
You should develop this project.
The small map ( navigator ) of the whole world is needs.
After "zoom right", I lose location and do not know where I there is.

Sorry, can you please explain this a little more, what do you mean by "zoom right"? Do you mean zoom right into the map? Seems flash can only zoom so much before the maths caculations are to big and things go funny. I'll put a limit on how far in you can zoom.

It wasn't easy! I converted it from the free Digital Chart of the World (DCW) data that you can get online. Once it was converted to svg slices I had to inport it into a huge illustrator file, tweak it by hand and then output the 72 tiles that make up the world map. Took about a week to get it right but the end result is 200 odd MB's of map files turned into 3 MB of swf's.
If you download the photoblog map you get the source so you could strip out the map titles and code and use it for somthing else.
