I recently offered my services for an open project that uses php and mysql to create a profile of a user. They are having serious problems with their javascript and cross browser validation.
When I offered my services to help out and maybe submit a demo of what would be possible I got a quick reply of a very strong NO. The author saying, I am VERY anti-flash for anything not strongbad.
Now, I had to agree with him about the strongbad part because I happen to like strongbad, but I was shocked to see the bad feelings for flash? And wonder if any of you have experienced this. To me it seems, at least imho, that flash would solve all of their problems because it is perfectly suited to do what they need.
Does flash have a bad name from other sites overdoing their sites with huge flash intros?
Or does flash just have the mis-understanding of being only for animation and cartoons?
Thats exactly it....Most people see flash as being for those "graphics" guys. I work with a lot of hard core developers and not one of them has opened flash, but they all hate it. They were shocked to learn that flash can work with a variety of other scripting languages....and as soon as I mentioned XML and Flash, they almost crapped their pants. But most Developers dont take flash seriously, because its only for "graphics" guys and cartoons.

Ok i saw this and had to give a response since i too HATED flash.
I used to do alot of developing in macromedia director (ver4 - 6 era). I spent a very long time using Lingo (director's langauge). This was great, you could do some really nice stuff and hack away with a really easy to use yet powerful scripting language. Then macromedia renamed their dinky animation program below director to 'Flash' and boasted how cool it can animate graphics for web browsers. Us coder types were 'pfft, flash, kiddie stuff! It will never surpass shockwave!' Well, flash only got more and more popular and director less and less. I grew increasingly frustrated and formed a passionate hate for flash since i spent so much time and energy on shockwave development.
Well, now i have the 'if you cant beat em, join em' thing going on so im willing to accept defeat and move on. Dont get me wrong, im not saying director is dead, its still a seriously powerful tool that can do neat things flash cant but for popularity and demand in the market, flash is the tool to know nowdays.

Well... Never ending Director vs Flash argument... ;)
Howdy and Welcome, srarcade... :)
I have used Director for more than 5 years before I joined Flash crew... The thing is that Director has its own power and Flash has its own as well... So, there is NO point of comparing two... (Yeah... I know... I used to call Flash as a retarded brother of the Director... :))

If they had the development force behind Director that they have now for Flash, Director would be kick-arse... I mean, does it even support multiple undo yet??? It's frustrating that though they are different, Director is being neglected because of its lack of popularity despite the advantages it holds and its possible potential.
ok, a little bit of a tangent... but yeah, people hate Flash because of how its abused, not for what it is.

I think flash would be taken as more of a serious dynamic web development tool if they introduced direct support for mysql and other databases, instead of having to use YET another language such as php. I think some ppl want to create pages that use mysql and therefore choose php to do all the work for the page rather than php and flash. I mean I am still learning about all this , but wouldnt actionscript be even that much more powerfull if they allowed you to connect to mysql without having to pass data from flash to php to mysql back to php back to flash ? Correct me if im wrong about this please.
