how/can i make keystrokes register data in my movie? is this possible?

ok,
i need to make a "type writer". basically i want to make key strokes on the key board show up in a text box...in my limited experience i've only been able to use a keypress when dealing w/ buttons. is ther a way to rliminate the button?
