help with sound on/off button, probably very simple answer.

I am trying to integrate an on/off button with sound on a page i am building. the only problem is when i return to certain sections of the timeline, the music overlaps or starts over again, even though there is no keyframe for the button there.

What settings need to be in order, or how should the layer and keyframes be set in ordert to avoid overlapping using an on/off button throughout the timeline.

If you are putting sound file directly on timeline then make its sync type to Stream . Then use any button and actions like stop(); and play(); to control the timeline. This will stop the timeline and sound both and viceversa.
