the capacity to accurately calibrate color and white point?
highly adjustable resolutions?
you like to lift big things?

CRT all the way.

get the best 21" sony trinitron you can afford. and while your at it - get three - I'm staring at this impressive wall of video - three monitor desktop - right now and love it deeply. (flash spread over three 21" monitors? - simply awesome.)

tft caveat? though you are generally stuck with one native resolution, and a native color cast (most panels claim to be "highly adjustable" - they are not very, in my experience) - tft panels usually come off looking very "crisp" (and usually too bright) - which makes them good for text. Trinitron aperature grille technology is fantastic for color, but looses on the crisp, defined text - until you hit the high end, high dollar range.

the main question - what is your working purpose? are you designing for print? where color absolutely has to match the printed version? - CRT is your only answer.

on the other hand - are you are developing for web - viewing and editing lots of code? where color really isn't an issue (because color is left up to the user and simply can't be controlled)? lcd might be the better choice.

go to your local computer store - and look at a bunch of monitors under differing circumstances. get what seems right for you, and is within your price range. and then LOVE it....

cheers

I recommend dual monitor video card and one of each. (I use a 19" CRT and an 18" TFT for same size screen area.)

I would keep a CRT just for color correction purposes. As secondary monitor of course.

As a designer I only use CRT for design work. Secondary CRT, TFT, LCD, etc for palettes or any other things.

Honestly to date I haven't seen a monitor that looks better than my 22" Mitsubishi/Nec and it is much cheaper than a comperable flat panel. Only downsides are the massive depth and the ~90lb weight.

If you don't mind not quite the same on screen quality, if you have limited space or a weak desk, or move frequently I'd go with a flat screen. I am recommending one to my aunt and mom for these very reasons. However if you are serious about design work nothing beats a high end CRT...at least not yet.
