View Full Version : preloading frames?
hi
ive got a big movie and i want the first 2 frames to load up with a preloader so that the website works. once these two frames have loaded i then want it to load the next two frames with preloaders on lots of little bits of animation.
is it possible to load frames on a timeline, instead of the total movie or individual movie clips?
cheers

;)
no prob
aaaaaarrrgghhhh
this hasn't solved my problem cos i didnt think bout it!
ive got a MC on the main timeline that i want to load up. inside that there is a MC. inside that is a MC. inside this 1 is lots of animation done with a serie of jpegs which take a long time to upload and are stopping the structure of the site coming up before the animation needs to work.
i what to load the MC on the main timeline using a preloader, then when that is up and working with some poor quality, small file jpegs in the place of the animation have a preloader showing the status of the animation (they can all load at the same time, they don't need to be sequential)
*i was thinking previously that i could put the animation MC on frame 2 inside another MC so that i could load the structure and then frame to, but the main timeline only has 1 frame so that it is loading all the frames of any MC that is on that frame before it will show anything*
might help if you can take a look?

but it takes a will to load up!
any ideas?

I suggest you read a loadmovie tutorial
loadmovie is great for breaking up you site into little bits. Your main interface is probably only a few k so this will load instantly allowing the user to start navigating. When they click on a link it loads an external swf into your main timeline. These external swfs can have their own preloaders so the user knows whats going on.
Definately the best way to go I think
my main interface is a movieclip and inside that movieclip and a couple others inside that there is a movieclip with some animation on it.
this piece of animation slides around on the main interface so i want it on the stage and show when the main interface appears but only show frame 1 of the animation (which will be a bad qualtiy pic) and a preload over this pic stating how many frames have loaded in this lil movie (animation) whilst loading the rest of the jpegs for the animation. when these have loaded i want this movie clip to move to frame 2 (where the proper jpegs start, and there is a mouse over action).
im gettin this all twisted in my head
i need to load a mc which is inside other mc's when the interface loads (all on frame 1 of the main timeline). but i want it to stop on frame 1 of this mc and have the first preload fullyloaded (ie. not include good quality jpegs. once this action has taken place i want a preloader to show over the 1st frame on the animation while the rest of it loads
i think im goin to give up for the nite and try 2morrow

i still say you should put your high quality jpegs in an external movie. Then preload the small interface which then goes to a frame which has a load movie action. This loads the external movie which has its own preloader.
Do a tut on load movies - well worth the effort
cheers
k
im gonna give em a try over the weekend. im just not sure about loading an external swf into a certain postion in a mc which is inside a few more mc.
thanks

it's easy - make an invisible movieclip the same size as your external movie. Place this anywhere in your main scene and give it an instance name. When you come to loading your external movie just load it into your target clip rather than a level
cheers
ps make sure the box in your invisible target clip is aligned top left.
hi again billy
k ive made a invisable mc and put the swf in and then dropped this mc into another mc which is inside various other clips (all kewl).
the problem is the external swf doesn't respond to the actions that are put on the mc's that it sits in.
please look at my site. go into products and the the cd rack. the cd rack scrolls from side to side inside products which 9in turn scrolls inside the main interface.
when i put the swf in it just appears when you go into products and doesn't scroll around and stay on the relevate page. in fact once it appears it won't disappear. i don't want to unload it or make it disappear it just needs to scroll like everything else?
in short: all the actions that are on the mc it sits in do not affect the external swf.
please look at my site and i think u will know wot i mean
sorry to be a pain.

I couldn't see the problem with your site but then I dont know what it is meant to be doing.
Make sure when targeting your loaded clip you path it correcting
eg
_root.mc1.mc2.invinstance.mc3
where invinstance is the instance to you loaded your movie into and mc3 is an instance of a mc within your external movie
see how that goes
btw I think the menu at the top should react on enterFrame rather than mouseMove
cheers
hi billy
ive still not been able to sort this, and don't know how to explain my problem. is it possible i can email you a skeleton file for you to have a look at?
ive tried posting it here but the file is too big even if i remove all the animation except 1.
this has got me really stumped.
