Scrolling Text Boxes

Every scrolling text box tutorial I've used will not work correctly if I put it behind a mask. Why? I can see everything else (text boxes, buttons to scroll with) but the text will not show up. Removeing the mask makes it visiable again, but I'm stumped as to why.
Anyone?

r u using device fonts?

i've tried device fonts, embeded a font, even having the external text file contain html coding for the font. still nothing.

it seems true type fonts are much more user friendly with flash than the postscript fonts i had been trying to use.
