View Full Version : Challenge - Images in Flash
rippazinc
06-14-2005, 01:11 AM
This is a very open and different type challenge.
The Challenge:
Create a "wallpaper" or other type image, from scratch, in Flash. The goal is to demonstrate Flash's drawing tools in action.
You may NOT:
-use ANY program except Macro Flash
-use ANY images whatsoever...they all must be hand drawn in flash
-use system fonts...all letters must be hand drawn
Hints:
-use plenty of layers
-use both radial, linear, and solid fill (but never bitmap!)
-play around with alpha
So, this is a VERY broad type challenge. Let's see what you guys make!
Here's some motivation:
1st place: choose from Macromedia Flash MX 2004 Pro, Macromedia Director Pro, Macromedia Captivate
2nd place: choose from remaining software
3rd place: choose from remaining software
runners up: recognition
i know it's silly to give 1st place a copy of Flash, but they can sell it or give it to someone else as a gift. so in actuallity, they're actually getting $700!!
[[ Attached is A VERY QUICK AND SIMPLE example of using layers, alpha, and hand drawing fonts ]]
Good luck to everybody!
PS:: mods, I don't know exactly where this thing would go, so it's here for now. Feel free to move it.

2nd place:
- 1 g webspace / THREE MONTHS

How does the time limit work? You allow multiple files entries? Or only one? How many shots at this, 1 post max or multiple?
Cool reward system you've got going there :).

Also, 'cause this is a drawing thing, are we sticking to the 25 lines of code, or are you extending that? Who judges it? What are the criteria? Are the "wallpapers" to be able to be used as such, or just be images which look wallpaper-worth?
I don't feel very cumfortable about this challenge, as I don't believe there have ever been rewards :/ (it's supposed to be 'Just for Kicks' :)) Did you talk about it to the admins?

First, thanks for the interest. I guess I wasn't specific enough:
How does the time limit work? - No time limit, judging stops when there are no more entries for two weeks.
You allow multiple files entries? Or only one? How many shots at this, 1 post max or multiple? - Post as many entries as you want. You may even win all three places! :)
Also, 'cause this is a drawing thing, are we sticking to the 25 lines of code, or are you extending that? - Of course the rules are bent in this case. Use ActionScript if you want, but there is no limit. WARNING! If you use someone else's script, that is not "from scratch" and ALL of your entries will be automatically disqualified.
Who judges it? - Me.
What are the criteria? - Overall look & creativeness
Are the "wallpapers" to be able to be used as such, or just be images which look wallpaper-worth? - Just images that one would even think about puting on their desktop. You don't have to size them as such, I'll do it for you.
Did you talk about it to the admins? - Nope. :) I guess the prizes are optional. So it's "just for kicks", but you can also take a gift if you want! :)
Good luck, and start sending in entries!
I guess the next question would be: how are those pieces going to be used? I mean, I have trouble believing you're willing to give out a Flash MX license for nothing :-\ And if you are, that's cool :D

I am not going to sell or distribute for profit the images (but I may use them on my desktop :) ). Don't worry, if you win, as of now you will get the prizes stated in the first post, and maybe the prizes stated in the second post.
good luck

I'm not sure either, but he/she might have gotten the copy of flash from work. I got my flash copy cause one of my relatives is a teacher. I got another copy of flash cause my dad's buisness gave them out to their employees and had loads of extras.

Like I explained a long time ago (nearly a year, right CyanBlue?) i got several coppies from my parents for christmas. don't worry, you won't get a "hacked" version, and yes, you WILL get your prize (if you want it, that is ;) )
start sending stuff in, because as of right now, there is a total of ZERO entries! if know body is interested, there's no point for me to spend a thousand bucks on a default winner

Used in my entry:
Symbol containing 720x3 rectangle with gradient alpha fill
7 lines of carefully engineered ActionScript ;)
And to think I was worried about making the 25 line limit :eek:
It would be 5 lines of code if I took out the animated drawing, but it's just so dang cool watching it get drawn.
If I win, I'll post the code and explain how it works
:edit: Wow, after posting it, I noticed the file size! 505 bytes.. Kuh-RAZY!

Invader that is very nice, it also looks like you're using attachMovie, because on my high end processor it is stuttering during the edges.

OK, I give up... :D
Sorry I just can't draw in Flash! I can draw by hand really well and scan in but, agh never mind, sorry.
invader
08-12-2005, 08:20 AM
the performance drain isn't because of the attaching method (even though, yes, i used attachMovie for simplicity).. the reason it stutters is because after running through the trig formulas, it has to place the new object over the lower layers, meaning a lot of alpha calculations.. you'll notice that when the current line is horizontal, it draws much faster, as it's not changing more than a 3-10 rows of pixels.
i used other methods and performance was about the same. you'll mainly see a performance difference with attachMovie when you're attaching something more complicated, or something containing an image file.
in mine, when it attaches the object, it only has to pull the 4 coordinates and three color codes for the gradient fill. there are almost 200 instances when it's done, and any given line will pass through at least 80% of the lines before it, exponentially increasing the number of times it has to recalculate the alpha for the parts that intersect.

This is the closest I could get to it, I had to do it based on a function of 1 degree or 180/PI and the width of the line drawing the suedo circles to produce the image. It takes exactly 180 degrees of rotation to complete. I used duplicatemovieclip to produce the lines.
var mc:MovieClip = _root.createEmptyMovieClip("line", 999999);
var linew:Number = 400;
var offset:Number = linew/2;
with (mc) {
lineStyle(0, 0x003300, 70);
lineTo(-offset, 0);
lineTo(offset, 0);
}
r = depth=0;
var orderofpi:Number = 3;
this.onEnterFrame = function() {
var m:MovieClip = mc.duplicateMovieClip("m"+depth, depth);
m._x = offset+(linew/(orderofpi*Math.PI))*Math.cos((r/(orderofpi*Math.PI))+linew/(orderofpi*Math.PI));
m._y = offset+(linew/(orderofpi*Math.PI))*Math.sin((r/(orderofpi*Math.PI))+linew/(orderofpi*Math.PI));
m._rotation = depth;
if (r == Math.PI*(180/Math.PI)) {
delete this.onEnterFrame;
}
depth++;
r = depth;
};

i'm very impressed with how close you came to matching the output with your formula.
as far as the speed is concerned, i swapped out the gradient filled rectangle in mine and replaced it with a line (since that what you're comparing it to) and it performed just as well until the last 10 lines or so, as the performance difference between methods finally starts taking an effect.
i'm still telling you the reason for the system drain in my entry is the alpha calculations. change your line to a rectangle and fill it with one color, fading alpha from 0 to 50 to 0. using either method, the output will be about the same. you just don't notice the difference between 3.78 and 3.76 extra seconds due to diminishing frame rate. (numbers are made up, just showing a point)
again, great job on how close you got to replicating my formula

Wow. This is getting intense (yet fun). "Rippaz", you may have to clarify/expand the rules, before people start submitting games and websites:) (and thanks!).
Please, maybe consider addressing the following:
Can one submit multiple entries?
Can one trace? (even if tracing original work?)
Can one use actionscript for this? (or use only actionscript)
Can one base projects from images under copyright?
Is there a frame limit for loading?
Can one use the new Player 8 Beta image capabilities?
Are there no rules, implied or otherwise, apart from the original ones?
Do submittions have to be unique to the competition (i.e. not used before in one's personal website/portfolio)?
Can the images "animate" (or be interactive)?
Sorry to be a whiner, it's just better to diffuse a situation before it goes past your original intentions.
P.S. I do really enjoy the latest actionscript-based submittions, especially "invader's"!

i think those clarifications would definitely help. i believe rippaz did say you're allowed to submit multiple entries. i don't think there is any way to effectively moderate whether or not the entry was made specifically for the competition. the only way to make sure images are created for the competition would be to give a theme (like nature scene, space scene, etc)
i have some opinions for the rest of the questions, but since it's completely up to rippaz, take my opinion with a grain of salt..
i think you should be allowed to trace work that you have done on other mediums, just not other peoples' work. many professionals do all their computer drawings on paper first. because it's a competition, shouldn't entries be made 100%, start-to-finish, by the contestant?
i think actionscript should be allowed, but not mandatory. the competition is to showcase flash's drawing abilities, both IDE and AS API
the point of the entries should be for wallpaper use, so animation and interaction should not be allowed. i know that may sound strange coming from the only person submitting an animation, but the wallpaper is the end result. watching the image being built is just something i did for entertainment only and should be ignored. in my opinion, mine should only be judged on the end result.

OK, first off, I think it's great that dylan posted these questions...i understand where you're commin from, so here we go:
Q.Can one submit multiple entries?
A.Of course you can. I've already said that :)
Q.Can one trace? (even if tracing original work?)
A.I'm really gonna bend my rules for this one. After reading invader's post, I'm saying OK, you can trace ONLY your own work. I see how tysont's work could simply be traced, so that's why I asked him for source. But yes, you can only trace your own work.
Q.Can one use actionscript for this? (or use only actionscript)
A.Yes, of course you can use actionscript. Only actionscript is also allowed as in xeef's sumbission. By the way xeef, you have yet to compile it into a swf for me :)
Q.Can one base projects from images under copyright?
A.No, not unless that image was created by the person him/herself
Q.Is there a frame limit for loading?
A.Nope, just don't go super insano crazy.
Q.Can one use the new Player 8 Beta image capabilities?
A.Not yet. I'll post something if it's allowed later.
Q.Are there no rules, implied or otherwise, apart from the original ones?
A.Well, not really, other than whatever I say in these posts of mine :)
Q.Do submittions have to be unique to the competition (i.e. not used before in one's personal website/portfolio)?
A.No, not at all. You can submit something you made before.
Q.Can the images "animate" (or be interactive)?
A.They can animate, such as in dylan's own submition, but NOT interactive. You see, an animated swf CAN be made into a wallpaper by many methods, but an interactive one really can't...
PS: tysont, you have at most 5 days to post your source for the last entry you made (entry03) or all of your entries will be disqualified! if you didn't know that tracing wasn't allowed, simply tell me and we can take care of things
btw, tell me what you think of the new prizes...it was the best i could do after my company refused to give me webspace :)
also, dylan, as of right now, i don't need any fla's except for what i ask for....
any other questions, feel free to post them here

Hey guys... it's appears as though I've stirred up some controversy in the competition :)
Hopefully I can set it straight for everyone...
The work in my latest entry (entry03) was not done by me but a friend of mine who is quite amazing at vector illustration. I merely submitted it for him since he doesn't have an account here and the rules state that more than one entry per user is permitted.
I assure you that the wolverine image was absolutely not created by any bitmap to vector program. An image WAS used purely for inspiration and guidance but was not traced in any way. Both an incredible amount of time and patience were invested in this image to produce such quality and detail.
I've uploaded the wolverine source file for you as well as another collection of images (all done by him) complete with their sources to help remove any doubts of his abilities.

I might make an entry, sorry if it seems like I am just turning on/off, just a little difficult when there are pictures like wolverine in there!
Anyway if you give us the closing date it would be good to get it at least 3 weeks notice before the actual date.

i didn't check out the immortality link, but magnets on fingers and toes sounds like alexchiu.com, a site i stumbled upon about 3 years ago.
headshotz, what in the world happened to your sig?? it's smaller and looks like it's been the victim of over-compression

I think headshotz is a helpful contributor to these forums and always eagar to get involved with good topics. Nothing but respect, but please don't ask headshotz to bring back that gigantic, overwhelming, thread-space eatin' signature! :)

Uhhh, wearing the metal clamps, wouldn't that be painful and
uncomfortable, it doesn't look like it would help much.

this conversation is pretty funny, and i'm not saying stop, but just a reminder:
You have about 12 days left until judging. At this point, I think I'm just gonna let the people vote :)
Just a reminder on the prizes :)
You can choose from these fully licenced products
Macromedia Flash MX 2004 Pro ($699)
Macromedia Director MX 2004 Pro ($1,199)
Macromedia Captivate 1 ($499)
Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 Pro($399) **
** If you choose Dreamweaver, you'll have to wait a few weeks or months, because my company takes a while to purchase new products. However, you ABSOLUTELY WILL get it eventually.
As you can see, there are now FOUR prizes instead of the 3 before, so there are four places (first, second, etc). Also, whoever gets first gets to choose which software they want, then second gets to choose from the remaining ones, etc.
These prizes total over $2790, so get started on those pictures!
Good luck!
NOTE: A new rule has been added to the contest. RippaZ Inc. has full permission to use and recreate the winning entries in whatever manner they want, if you choose to accept our prizes.

btw, it doesnt matter what i say...im not going to be judging...the people of the forum are (im going to make a poll...)
