Preloaders - Integration

So Ive read the tutorial and I have a semi-basic understanding of the actionscript behind it. I have also searched thorugh and read some of the other forum threads on preloaders. I already put together a fairly basic flash website, however its a presentation (or slide) style format using Flash Pro MX 2004.

Where would I incorporate the preloader? Would I do it on the main slide (parent) slide? Would I make a preloader save it as a MC and then put it on the first frame of a layer? My problem is that my site is almost 1.3 mb to download and it needs a preloader.

Any suggestions.
