Users default player

Is there some way to have a button event open a .avi/mpeg from the root folder where the .swf is in the users default media player ?
Also I read somewhere on this board that 25mb was a maximum recomended
size for .swf with movie content ?

Any advice around this area would be really welcome. I really want to avoid using director if possible.
