sending "~" to a server script...how?

I am trying to send a folder name to a script on my server using sendAndLoad(), but flash keeps turning my tilda symbol into some kind of wierd text. Any ideas?

oh gosh, my apologies, I wasn't thinking(again). Flash does send it, its sent in a different form though i.e. S%^ something or another, not sure exactly, but when I was getting my error in flash it was saysing "error contacting server 'http://mydomain.com/S%^username and I wanted it to say mydomain.com/~username ..but I realized the error was somewhere else and my server understands the coded version of ~ just fine.
