I noticed at least two SWF footers which (due to either poor code, or me having too many IE windows open at once) popped up the standard "This Flash movie is causing the computer to lag" message. For this reason I have temporarily disabled SWF footers. I'm looking into how to make viewing footers optional (like FlashKit do) but in the mean time, I'd like opinions on whether SWFs should come back. I've noticed a signifcant boost in page loads speeds in just the last 5 minutes.

Footers, I don't love'em and I don't hate'em. Kind of neutral you could say. However I would like to see them disabled in the Site Check forum if that's possible. It's tough to evaluate a site with 10 banners running in the background. I know I could just close the window, but then if I want to respond I have to open the window I just closed back up again.

Just my two cents,

If they make this place slow, then please take them off. There is no reason to make this place slow. It has great speed right now, thus one of the reasons I visit a lot.

Optional would be great ! Then everyone can decide for her/him self, like with avatars, right ? (I know, I know ... I oughta make a decent one one of these days ... not a 10 seconds footer)

i personally don't like em much, when they start buggin me, or slowing things down at my end i just go into the user cp and turn them off... doesn't everyone have this ability?? of course, it turns off the whole signiture i think. i know i did it once back a while wehn i was having a hard time loading pages....

I would be with the school of thought thats would not like to see the speed comprised by objects that really dont offer very much...

Content without clutter

but on saying that i would not like to see the avators go aswell, mmmm then again graphics to over 'character' to a site?

but speed is of the essence...tough one!!

every user has an option to disable "user's signatures in their posts"

If you want to disable it ..........
====================
user cp > Edit Options > Show user's signatures in their posts? ( yes no )
select NO

As the owner of an gaudy, large footer SWF I must say that I am gravely offended. Heheh... nah, I'm not particularly attached to the notion of having a footer, but I appreciate the option being added to the forum. Vive le choice!

Strok pointed out that it's possible for people to disable footers in general but I think that's a bad move because it means you wouldn't see my greeting, or other text-based info in someone's footers. I think for the moment we'll keep Flash footers off. Elite hackers like 20TS can keep theirs without our tags :)

Perhaps, as moderators and lords of all that is surveyed, we could kindly ask the offending folks to tone their footers down a bit.

I know I'm one of 'em with this big orange monstrosity. I wouldn't mind if someone tapped me on the shoulder about it... to be honest I kinda expected it to happen.

I'm working on a new one right now that's much more tame.

Could you have some kinda code that looks for "swf" in the footer? If the user has the option turned off to view footers they wouldn't see 'em and people like Jesse would still be able to display their snarfy goodness.
