multiple buttons to trigger multiple movie clips

I have alot of "thumbnail" picture BUTTONS around a square, you click a button and it triggers a movie by Tell Target. the movie is a large picture appearing in the large square, it appears with a button to close the large picture/movie.

If I click multiple buttons without closing the picture first, then the large pics "stack up", can I make it so when you click a thumbnail, whatever big pic/movie is in the large square will close so the picture/movies don't overlap?

why not have all the large images in the one movie clip? Then the buttons can just tell the one clip to go to different frames...

Well, mainly because I'm clueless, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.:(
