The problem is that our website becomes very popular and as a result our virtual server just can't handle the traffic.
Unfortunately we can't afford to pay 400USD/month to host our site on 100% dedicated server ( we're not making enough).

red penguin

Is that what it costs per month for a 100% dedicated server? I think I can a certain amount a month for a better service...I shall make a donation...

Anyone else out there agree?

Well guys, I have a better idea

what a bout making a project every now and then (game, banners, commercials ............) for others and sell it from here
we all to be the producers
and it belongs to ActionScript.org
with the crew that added to it

Also you guys here may do some banners for renting

Ricod

So let's get moving

I sit in my room most days and wonder how on Earth some of these other sites make enough money to cover a dedicated host. At the moment we have a very good arangmenet with our semi-didicated provider but moving up to a dedicated server costs significantly more (with any provider) and I just don't see how our fellow developer sites make the cash!

Ricod

Aren't most of 'em sponsored by big companies ? Also, most of em have banners and pop ups (bleh, evil). But hey, maybe if the chat thingie works out, maybe we could use that in some way to raise a little money for the site ?

Jesse
01-29-2002, 11:58 AM
Most have banners yes, but we've gone without banners for a few months now because thye just don't make good money if you go with the big companies. We figure advertising ourselves and making our own deals is worth the opportunity cost of not running banners. Popups still pay kinda well but I hate them so much I'd prolly stop visiting my own site if they existed :)

So, what do u think Jesse and all the others??

Tink
01-29-2002, 12:10 PM
i don't know how but i think this site ought to make money. there isn't a better forum in my opinion to get things answered.

how about some kind of merchandise?

do other sites do that? ultrashock don't seem to have advertising etc......... what do they do???????

Hi,
I agree with you on both counts Bleeda, this is the best actionScript site and some kind of merchandising would be an excellent idea for the site to make money - suggestion1: a book detailing all the tutes in some kind of order from beginners upwards, 2: a CD with the tute code on it to accompany the book.
The significant difference on this site ( compared to others) is that the tutes explain what the code does and why - once you start to understand the fundamentals of AS the power of Flash5 and AS becomes obvious.
So, ta to all contributors and think on my idea Jesse, if I can assist in any way - just ask.

so why don't we do something and get started - first off, someone needs to decide what sort of book we want - or don't want ......

400 seems a little steep, where the heck is the server? Oh wait there's a link below...

hmmm well here's a possibility and it will depend on where you are as to what this will cost but...

the chief tech guy where i work has a T1 piping directlly to his loft and pays @150 a month to run his own server (3 actually) he even picked up a SUN UltraSpark for $500 off of ebay... (in it's hayday a VERY expensive machine).

have you guys ever thought of just maintaining the thing your self? i know that there are probably maintenance issues but yknow a server doesn't have to be that great of a machine (usually they can be a little on the crappy side. I have a compaq workstation that i've always thought of turning into one, got it for $400...)

Tchatchki is good too!

Look at this site. I've sent a few friends who have bands to this site. The only problem might be the international shipping but... you might try it..

http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/index.aspx

Anybody who has a little side business thingy where they want to sell shirts etc. should look this up.

I'd gladly contribute some design work---A SQUIRRELL SHIRT! THAT WOULD RULE!

might be some copyright issues though hmmm

yeah, a t-shirt with your afro would be pretty mean too...yours AND Morty's!!

Jesse

I've looked at systems similar to this before that also offer stuff like coffee cups and the like. I figure they're good little gimics too but the problem is that we need original art work. We'd need some designers to volunteer because I'm no artist...

I'm sure we can scare something up for you.

It's a matter of advertaising, more visitores here, so u can have sponsers, advertisment ................. and so on

vilehelm

uhm, more visitors doesn't equal more money, if there's anything that should've been learned over the last few years it's that.

trackable ROI is what advertisers want now.

you might start thinking about offering at least different variations of banners. The skyscraper banner (125x800) is becoming popular and i think actually pretty effective, also what is your current file size limitation for advertisement? you might want to up that so that you can attract a wider variety of ads.

red penguin

Vile, how ya feel?

"trackable ROI" ??? I see that and it reads "trackable KING"...

sfmi...

Hey farafiro, a skyscraper ad is just an incredibly tall ad that is becoming popular:

example (http://advantage.en.msn.com.hk/flattened/F3227EF4-540E-4F94-9611-935DAACAFEB7.asp)

nothing else to it really

Sorry for the ad speak

ROI = Return on Investment

Basically they want to see a direct return on their money. TV for instance provides poor trackable ROI. The internet provides very very good trackable ROI.

Yahoo has been doing a lot of intresting pseudo po ups lately. I just saw Britney this morning (horrible ads for the SuperBowl last night).

red penguin

There was a "SUPERBOWL"...What was the number, who played, who won? Who cares?

Shows how in touch I am with what the Americans are inundated with surely on a daily basis...

Hey Jesse, i was doing some reading up on Google and how they use text based advertising. have you ever considered using that? It's pretty effective and you can place several adds on one page...

Also working on some stuff for you (tshirts etc) in between everything else.

Jesse
02-11-2002, 05:52 AM
We've actually found text links to be the most effective method for linking, believe it or not. One text link on the homepage got almost twice as many clicks as a graphical link for the same product, but companies generally don't want text based links because htye think a greater presence is better (which is logical but not the way it seems). We're just about to finalize a new advertising deal as it happens. We're also considerring re-vamping the site to meet the new 'standards' for banner, block and scyscraper ads (and to make it faster loading and less cluterred). Stay tuned.

vilehelm

The text links work because the are NOT banners. there's a stigma about banners these days. Cool, it seems you have everything well in hand :) .

What are you guys talking about?! C'MON! Banner ads are great! EVERYONE loves trying to shoot the monkey or chase that little dot. They're classic!!!

Okay, back to reality. I find text links are less obtrusive and tend to get more traffic too. Who'da thunk it, eh?

Vile, I'd be SO ALL OVER an AS.org T-shirt. That would be sweeeeeet. Make sure to use alot of orange! *wink, wink*
