View Full Version : how to convert .swf to .avi properly?

Objective:
- My main goal is to convert the flash 8 animation I made into a movie such as ".avi" format, so that people can play it without worrying about the filters in flash 8 that is not supported in previous flash players and so that people wont have to update their flash players.

What I did:
- I exported my flash document into a movie in a ".avi" file type for windows media player.

Problem:
- It wont play the movie clips inside my flash document even though its working in a .swf file. And if I break the movie clips or bring it back my animation inside the movie clip into my main timeline, it would remove the filters I applied to my movie clips.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this or can anyone tell me how to get around it?

Why not export it as a .EXE file, no Flash Player X required (you can run it on almost anything). Theres specially programming for the next/prev/exit buttons though, for EXE's.

There is not simple way around this issue. Animation studios have been complaining about this for years. I even met some of the Flash development team and brought up this issue. They said it's "on the list" for Flash 9.

When you output to AVI it only outputs whatever is animated on the main timeline. So there are really only two fixes:

1) Convert all your embedded movie clips to looping graphics, then output to AVI

2) Output a SWF. Then start a blank Flash project, import the SWF, then output that to AVI. Should be no problem!

There is also a third party program to convert SWF to AVI. I've never used it, but I know it's out there.

Then there's the simplest fix of all: let the viewers update to Flash Player 8. it's free and easy. The AVI you output will be much larger than your SWF output, so it will take your viewers less time to download the new player than to download your AVI.

1) I converted all the movie clips into a looping graphics but it took away all the filters I applied to my movie clips.
2) I did output a SWF then imported it to a new flash document but got an error saying "One or more files were not imported because there were problems reading them."

And I tried using the SWF2AVI program but still haven't made it to work properly.

Its funny since when I used Flash MX to output my SWF files into a new fla, it works properly.

I converted 1 of my scene from the animation that im working on (test.gif). If you can see all the shadows of that character and some filter effects on the objects was removed by making it into a graphic symbol instead of a movie clip.

Here's another question: If I exported my movie (flash 8) into a .Exe file would it still be playable into other flash player without going through the updating process?

The file was orginally a Flash MX 2004 and I brought that up to Flash 8 to apply some filters to add more depth.

If you export the movie into an executable (EXE) file, it compiles the Flash Player into the file along with your movie. Thus, the viewer doesn't need to have any version of the Flash Player installed, and no updating is needed.

You might consider reporting on the AVI conversion issue at Macromedia's Bug Report and Feature Request page:

http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

The more pressure they get about this, the more chance they might even fix this issue in a later patch for Flash 8.

Also, your inability to reimport your SWF into Flash sounds like a bug to me.

I heard some good things about this geovid-thing (http://www.geovid.com/Flash_To_Video_Encoder/) as well, haven't tried it myself so I can't say anything for sure. A long time ago I read some thread about the same issue, look into it (http://www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?t=22875), it might give you the answer you're looking for...

1) Run your .swf movie either in fullscreen mode or window mode..

2) Use a Screen Video Capture software, like Camtasia Studio... and start recording the complete movie and save it as AVI

Very Simplee...........

Movie Clips will not render when you export them to an Avi. The 2 ways to fix this that I have used are:
1. Convert the movie clips to graphic clips(these can still have animation which will render but, code cannot be attached to them).

or

2. Import the Flash move into Director and render from there.

If you use screen capture make sure that you are using an appropriate frame rate. The version of Camtasia I have used cannot capture faster than 15 fps. So make sure the capture rate matches your framerate.

or you can try Screen VidShot by geovid.com, as for me, i didn't have any problems with capture rate matching framerate.

I suggest you get Moyea Flash to Video Converter (http://www.flash-video-mx.com/flash_to_video_web/), and have a try, it must meet for you.

or another variant is here (http://www.geovid.com/Flash_to_Video_Encoder_PRO/). it suppots a lot of popular formats, can add logos, watermarks, and even converts to mp4 media content (for mobiles-i'm very glad that it can do that :)). of course it has a free trial version

P.S. i see that somebody else except me likes squirrells :) anybody else? :)
