Exactly who are volunteering here ? Just to see who's available for what, so Jesse and 20 ton Squirrel know who to draw from. :)

I'm in....

I'd like to suggest that any volunteers list their skills and what they'd like to volunteer for.

For instance, to help with the engine one should have a good grasp of C and object-oriented programming. I'm an amateur coder, so my techniques will seem a bit hackish and kludgey but I get the job done (and well, I might add).

Right...
1. Need I say ActionScripting? In the past two months, I have created, been creating, a standalone app for use as an xml based test....The engine itself isn't all that impressive, but what is, is the fact that I have created 12 different options for the test. Just to name a few....

review q & a - user can review what he answerd vs correct responses
timer - shows total time at end or not/limits test time
show hints - pics, text
randomize the answer array - or not
user prefs - user can modify from a list of 5 fonts, any colors for text, BG, buttons, border, etc
loads images with each question and info page...3 per question

Learned a lot about product development, coding...duh...structure, communication...To date the largest project I've had the privvy of doing EVERYTHING myself...
2. Am a huge testing freak...If I could have any job, I think it might be testing apps...As a "competent" as coder, I really get into the debugging phase...
3. Other than that, I ain't got much! Sorry folks, but I will have to say I am a fast learner and willing to do whatever it takes to get something done....Like I've said before, something need getting done, I'll figure the damn thing out...

Great Ide 20TS !

I guess I'm volunteering for the clientside. I have experience with GUI's, yer basic scripting (although a bit weak ... :( ). The rest isn't really useful here (unless we're gonna simulate human anatomy here :) ).

Also, although I can't help with the engine itself, I would like to monitor its progress for educational reasons (sure sounds better than "I'm a curious fella" :) )

* one note - I'm not much of a debugger ! I tend to dislike a project if I'm stuck on the same part for too long ! *

Pengie, you are a developer's wet dream. A person who LOVES to test. never thought i'd see the day...

Well i'm all front end "ahem". Design and usability are my two big areas of interest.

I understand project management very well as i work in a small team environment every day.

So i can help structure wise and workflow wise at the begining if need be. Keep all the ducks in a row etc...

After the app is built i can help with the creative integration and can REALLY help with help docs etc... i'm good with words and images and explaining things.

Programming wise I'm a freakin nightmare (and not in a good way). I can usually get things to happen but it's ugly. however i'm a wiz at creating and understanding usable mechanisms and dynamics. The games that i make, i think, are really good and eploit the limitations of flash well.

basically i'm good for ideas and advice...and donuts.

and enthusiasm

Why should we volunteer In the first place ?

vilehelm
01-29-2002, 03:41 PM
Why not - got something better to do?

Ricod
01-29-2002, 03:47 PM
Well, its best to keep the actual deciders small. And if yer not volunteering, but have an interest, how else would the project leaders know u're interested in participating ? Or that yer up to the designated 'task' ?

Whew! so many jokes to make there, it's too easy, in the spirit of cooperation i'll shut my trap.

Everyone, rush over to the two cents thread and shout out your ideas.

I set up an "Input Thread" for ideas called

"Your Two Cents Goes Here".

Oh i have another skill, I'm a killer icon maker (came in ninth at the iconfactory's pixelpalooza, i was robbed). If we have smilies etc. I'd love love love to help on that. (that is my dream job)

hehe, I'm not a good programmer, well some of you know that maybe I'm one of those ones that bother a lot with Questions, but too I can say that would be nice to be part of the beta test team, I have allways dream with that about be a beta tester, but never had the oportunitie.

Let me know if it is possible.

Vile, I think that your experience and expertise would be of great benifit in the design of the client. If you aren't heading that up then you should at least be one of the almighty consulting influences.

I know Farafiro was joking, but I gotta say this to anyone who really wonders that:

If you have to ask then ya got no business being on here.

I'm giving up ALOT of my coveted trade secrets here as far as this engine goes... I'm contributing in this way for a couple reasons:

I want to and you can't stop me. Nyah-nyah.
I want to help drum up support and popularity of this - my most favorite internet haunt.
I need to challenge myself.
I want to put subliminal messages in the client that influence users to put gouda cheese in their ears.

*steps off his Official Soap Box... officially*

Right. Back to my job before they can me.

Nothing wrong with that...I think we actually need that for guidance and direction and every little helps....Someone has to do it and it sounds as if you've got the experience...I'm all for it...

Well said, Squirrel, on points 2 and 3...As for 4, can we change that to camembert?

Of course that's the goal, comrade. We're being silly (for the most part). Don't worry, we play nice (for the most part).

I think that the thread needs to be set back on track. Volunteers signing up and stuff. So far we've got:

20 Ton Squirrel, Rico, Vilehelm, Red Penguin, JungleMan, and Farafiro. Didn't we have more people pledging support on the original thread, or is it just me?

So far most everyone has expressed interest in the client design, which is fine, but are there any takers for the chat engine other than m'self? Anyone? Anyone?

I think for some things it will run smoother with smaller teams like we have right now(or in Squirrel's case on his own).

Hey, we can always hit the flashkit forum if we get lost. :p

Like most here I am not a programmer but am happy to help however I can...

design, testing etc

I'm on a mac - will this engine be cross-platform?

vilehelm
01-30-2002, 11:40 PM
However I do have access to some hard core C dudes (nerds). If anything gets dicey i can always plug them for advice.

Will Jesse be helping with the XML aspect of it? Are we going to use XML in anyway?

Love to be involved, just not sure how I can help (yet) your tech talk keeps confounding me somewhat and I must say I am waiting to see how the organisation of it develops, sounds like a logistical nightmare to me. Though by the seems certain peeps are already storming their way through that mire!
Been keeping an eye on the threads though and it sounds fantastic, count me in, if I can contribute I'll certainly have a go. Guess design or testing would be my best bets?

Check the thread titled The PLAN (http://www.actionscripts.org/forums/showthread.php3?threadid=8726) and PM the Director of the team you wish to help out. Give a brief detail of your skills and what ye'd like to do... maybe an e-mail address... a million dollars in the fridge with a padlock... oh yeah, and a can of salted cashews.

Okay guys, you should get a copy of the engine and get on. Familiarize yourselves with it and all. It's good stuff! Promise!

20 Ton Squirrel
02-06-2002, 12:50 PM
Get yerself a copy of the CLIENT to connect to the engine... *grin* For those who are interested, I can provide a link to a better client than GMUD. It's called MUSHclient... I've used it for two years now and it's a great tool. It's shareware, so you'll have to put up with an annoying splash screen, but it's worth it for the features. But then again... if you aren't coding on there you probably don't need something like that. Ah well, you decide.

http://www.gammon.com.au/

Guy who made it is an Austrailian. Go fig. You crazy Aussies.

I've noticed PixelWit signed in. Good show! C'mon down, folks, and enjoy the show. See if there is something you can contribute to the project! Explore some, there's plenty to do on there.

Welcome aboard Rupert and IFzen. I've been hoping you two would get involved. Don't worry, we may be asinine but we play nice.

Anyone else? Sound off!

create BillyT unguessablepassword billyT@someplace.com

When you are in your office, just type...
@desc zoomfreddy's office
I assume that's the name of your office...
It will then switch 'modes' and it'll be waiting for your input. Type away (Hit return when you want and it will give you a newline...) and then when you are finished hit return one more time. You'll see as per usual an empty field. Hit a "." (period, full-stop...) and return and it'll bring you back to "chat" mode...Then type...
look zoomfreddy's office....You should then see your newly described office.

You can do the same for yourself!

Squirrel, been told we now have doors, is that true?

zoomfreddy
02-09-2002, 10:57 AM
thanks Red..., already tried that...for me works, but for my office...
"Zoomfreddy does not have an office." is what i get.

I should be there this afternoon about 3ish...Paris Time...

zoomfreddy
02-09-2002, 11:26 AM
yeah, i tried again and....the same....

the path:

walkway
hallway
staircase
west
north
north
north
west

that is... if i keep the track fine...but anyway, when you get in front of Jesse's office, turn to the west, and there is my "indescriptable" office :)
...and now it's time to sleep...

Hi, I had that problem when I kept trying @desc pinkaboo's office, (pinkaboo does not have an office - grr grr stamp feet - YES I DO!!) but then I tried @desc office (while I was inside the office of course) and it did work.
also to add to Pengie's instructions if you change your mind and want to exit @desc without making changes or you need to exit quickly from that input mode simply type @abort

maybe that'll work for you too?

K

20 Ton Squirrel
02-11-2002, 02:55 PM
Okay, Zoomfreddy, your problem is solved. I forgot to change ownership of the office over to you, so that's why it would've defied your attempts to describe it.

As for the problem Pink described, I remembered WHY that's happening. The code that is used to recognize and interpret commands has something called Environment Matching.

This means that if you have fifty cell phones in a room, you can say get 32nd phone and it will know EXACTLY what you are talking about.

It also assumes that if you do something like @desc pinkaboo's office that the person with that 's is carrying the object you're trying to describe.

For instance, if Jesse was carrying the colorful koosh on his person, I could type @describe jesse's koosh and the engine would know what I'm talking about. Make sense?
