I posted this before on the original thread but thought it prudent to repost here so you folks can check it out...
If anyone's willing to take the dive and DL the freeware they can connect to my current server at:
208.244.32.251:1138
It's a telnet connection and you could go there from a command prompt, but I suggest that you use a client that I have set up here (http://lonewolfe.net/~grimslayde/GMUD.zip). It's PC, so you Mac users will need to download something else.
If you download the client, just unzip it and run the GMUD executable. Click on the connect button and select Wayland, then hit okay. You should get some splash text almost immediately. If you haven't logged in before, type:
create <name> <password> <e-mail address>
... and hit return.
If you've created already, just type:
connect <name> <password>
... and hit return.
The interface is alot like mIRC and Zork mixed. I'll see you there if you are interested. I go by Grimslayde there. I'm usually on between 6AM to 5PM CENTRAL STANDARD TIME (Houston, TX). I may be idle, so gimme a sec to respond. I usually do.
C'mon, take the dive that Red Penguin and Vile already have! Join the fun! Call now, supplies are limited!!!

no fair, I tried and couldn't connect
followed all the instructions too
hmm, maybe it's a work network thing?
I just get :
%%% Disconnected from server
%%% Error Connecting: connection timed out
pants pants pants
guess I'll try again later, maybe from home

The server is up and I'm on there, so it's not a problem on that end. Vile and Pengie connected straight off the download, so I'm sure that the client is configured correctly. It might just be lag on the connection that is making it time out. Give it a try later, I'll be there.
ya, i gave it a whirl also, same problem... maybe the firewall here at work, i will give it another try at home this evening.

I initially had a problem with our firewall but i got the IT guy to open a hole for me. You need the Port and the IP set to get through. (heh, told him it was for another project i'm working on)
It's cool. I would also encourage people to look at other flash based chat rooms. there are a few and i think there are many lessons to learn. I wish i could remember the subway one that i saw. Every room was like a part of a city and the company sold advertisement within those rooms (Diesel Jeans). Actually i think it was shockwave but any multi user environment like that is good. Yahoo games is a very cool fun environment.
More exposure to the paradigms that are out there already will help us avoid pitfalls i think.

Good idea Vile...no, GREAT idea...If anyone knows of any Flash based rooms, let's compile a list so we can ALL check them out this week...Does Moock have something? I don't remember. I'll check it out...
And I also encourage everyone to get onto Wayland and talk to Grimslayde!

yep twas the evil firewall, tried again at home and had no problems, yay, and Mister Grimslayde was lounging at the hearth too. It's great, just wish I could connect at work, boo.
I'm off to source cool Flash chat rooms now, see you later :0)

Several people mentioned logging into mIRC or using AIM to chatter about the project. While that's all well and good, you can just as easily log into the engine right now using the client I provided. Not a demand, just a suggestion. I'll see to setting up some rooms and koosh balls to toss at one another. *grin*

Hideous footer?! You cut me to the quick, comrade! *snicker* What say you all to a meeting tomorrow or Sunday?

Just yankin' yer chain! , see it pierced an emotion somewhere in Texas...hehe...
I'm up for a meeting..I think Sunday would be better, but it all depends on times. Let's try and get something though...

Dunno when the next meeting will be... mayhaps this weekend again? Same time, same channel? I'm game, as I'll probably be on there anyway.
You should be able to create, Zoom. I haven't turned off the ability to do that (yet).
Nope, can't make a connection through the nasty firewall - dang.
I'll give it a go @ home on the Mac...

hmm ... this firewall thing may be a REAL problem (I'm behind one too, so ...)

Most chat clients have firewall problems, i can't use mIRC at work either
20 Ton Squirrel

I can open up a port to log in on lower than 1024, but we can't configure the Flash Client to do that. I'll check on my server and see what ports are available and post back in a few. Stay tuned, true believers.
Ricod

That's the REALLY odd thing ... I can log into Director multi user server (like HABO hotel uses) which runs on port 1621 I believe.
20 Ton Squirrel
02-22-2002, 04:02 PM
No word back from my network admin if I can use a low port yet. RicoD, you can probably log in on 1621 because your Firewall has a hole poked in it for that. I'm no networking guru, though, so don't quote me on that.
Ricod
02-22-2002, 04:08 PM
Well, which one are u people using ? (so I can poke a hole there (well, the system administrator that is)) :)

The standard login port is 1138.
The Flash client port is 2020.
A glorious NoPrize to the one who can tell me two significant, yet useless, trivia facts about the use of 1138.

This isn's a geeky Star Wars moment is it?
THX 1138 being the name of G Lucas' first feature film.
Reportedly the THX 1138 is found in several places throughout his films, ie it is cell block 1138 from which the wookie is transferred.
Ricod
02-22-2002, 04:44 PM
hmm ... who's being geeky, now ? heheh ! With all those facts :)
20 Ton Squirrel
02-22-2002, 04:45 PM
Most impressive, Pink! Right on the money in both takes. The original creator of the engine is a big Star Wars geakfreak. So you'll find your NoPrize on the engine. Way to be!

The geek fu runs strong in this one....
We must proceed with caution.

Hey when are we all going back in to Wayland to sit in Red's wading pool and drink that cheap red wine he's got? - You guys are never there, I've been running around in my orange boxer shorts, shouting away and feeling left out. (Sniff) Am I going in when you guys are asleep or is it gathering dust?
vilehelm
02-27-2002, 04:40 AM
I'm spending too much time there...Probably if you log on later in the evening you should be able to catch 20 or myslef there in the morning.
It seems though that we're all so spread out that we're hardly up at the same time, except for Red who never seems to sleep.
Hmm 9 am your time is probably around 7 pm my time maybe 8. It seems like we'll be chatting in shifts...
Rupert
02-27-2002, 11:46 AM
Yep I think its going to have to be shifts.
"Wake me if anything moves out there..."
How is the rest of it all going? Can I see any of what you guys have been working on?

I'm getting all confused with this time zones malarkey! Too hard!
I get early bird Americans and the ever wakeful Pengie when I log in in the evenings.
I think 8pm here is 7am in Melbourne, and 2am here is 1pm Aus time - boo - silly times!
What time zone are you in Vile? I can't find your fair city on the convertor I'm using.
Pengie is easy, he's only an hour ahead at the moment so I can just about cope with that!

Vile is the same as NY, Pink...so he's what, 5 hours behind you?
Yeah, it's gonna be rare to catch those Aussies for some of us..and vice-versa...btu as it's been said, I don't sleep!

I believe the chat that you are referring to is located at
http://www.dubit.co.uk
It's a very impressive chat indeed.
I'm new here so I hope someone has not posted the same info already. This flash chat project that you all are talking about, is this open to everyone to view or are just a select few just testing it right now? Thanks for your time, and I hope I helped a little.

Heya Germ, all this is pretty open. We have teams that are tackling certain aspects of the project such as the chat engine, the client design, the client mechanics, and beta testing. You are more than welcome to come aboard. Browse this forum and read up some on what's going on. Get back to me later on it!

Yeah also be sure to set the forum view for 60 days or more back, this has been going on awhile and there are some conversations that aren't visible in the 30 day view...

..:: after much searching and reading through most of your threads ::..
Hey guys,
I downloaded from 20's GMUD link on page one of this thread and am trying to connect using 208.244.32.251 port 1138 and it keeps giving me "connection timed out" message. Very disappointing indeed ... after all that reading I feel that you owe me :)
I'm not behind a firewall so my first assumption is that you are using a difference address. Is this so? If not, then maybe it's time to clean out the cobwebs from my computer. Spiders and roaches help the internet connection right?
20 Ton Squirrel
05-10-2002, 08:18 PM
Yeah, my bad. We not-so-recently changed the IP address on my server after dropping UUnet. I'll update the GMUD file out there and you can grab it again... or you can just change it to lonewolfe.net and it should resolve from there.

Just for your reference, the project is most certainly not dead. Lots of the people on the project like Red Penguin and myself have been out-of-pocket... either out of the country or doing the slave-labor thing.

We'll have the new server up and ready within about four days if everything goes to plan. Then we can get to implimenting this.

Alright! I'll be out of town from the 15th to the 20th, after that I should be open to get the ball rolling. I'll pester you in PM about further details I'll need, Jesse. Congrats on finally getting a good home for AS.org, we all appreciate it!
