why is java faster than flash?

why is it that java is so much faster than flash - i'm thinking of visual experiments that i see (maybe flash is faster at some things?)

Because it has a much bigger, stronger, optimized "player"

The disadvantages are that its a lot larger to download and install and it takes longer to load up.

as3 will increase the speed to close to processing so....
