View Full Version : getURL not working in IE
Hi, I'm just trying to open up a web page from a button. The .swf works fine but when it's placed in an html page it doesn't work on some IE6 machines. Any idea what would cause this???
Attached are the files I used to test getURL. I tested it out on 4 different machines here:
computer 1 (IE6 sp2): does not work
computer 2 (IE6 sp2): works!
computer 3 (IE6): does not work
computer 4 (IE6): works!
firefox: works on all.
I've been combing through the IE settings, flash player version, etc. but still can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

pop up blocker.
not coding.
good thinking but already considered that one...IE popup blocker turned off, google popup blocker (taskbar) disabled (set to allow not just 'hidden'), no other blockers installed.
I'm thinking IE setting?
what version of flash player on these boxes? what os?
computer 1 (xp IE6 sp2 F8): does not work
computer 2 (xp IE6 sp2 F8): works!
computer 3 (xp IE6 F8): does not work
computer 4 (win2000 IE6 F6): works!

Post the link for people to test here.
I swear it is just some form of pop up blocker. It can't be the code.
hmmm, I was about to just say "check out the attachment in the 1st post", but thought I'd try uploading it to a server first since I hadn't tried that....sure enough the simple files in the first post do not work when on my local machine but they work when uploaded to a server!
some difference in IE zone settings between internet and local intranet???
I'll play around with it (it'll be nice to test things locally before uploading) but at least I now know it does in fact work :)
thanks
Answering my own question in case anyone stumbles across this thread with a similar problem:
After leaving this issue alone for a week I decided to revisit it. I could execute the getURL from a server (even the localhost server) but not locally. A little more googling and I found some references to a bug with flash player 8....sure enough when I uninstalled 8 and installed flash player 7 it works great!
conclusion: when a swf is inserted into an html file and run locally getURL will NOT work on some machines using flash player 8, although the same file will run correctly when run from a server.
hopefully the next flash player released will fix this bug!
