View Full Version : Tutorial Ideas
So Flash Gordon and I have been working on some tutorials. We've just finished the ever popular Write data to a text file tut using ASP and PHP. We re-made an old classic, sending email with flash using, ASP, PHP, and Perl. So, who else has tutorial suggestions. We're feeling motivated so lets hear some ideas....oh and please, no off the wall, obscure requests.

I recently wrote one called "movieclip buttons" beacuse the button symbol is the devil linky (http://tut.pixelbox.cc/tutorial.php?t=16&s=0)
Can we submit stuff to actionscript.org?

Could you do a tut on the tween class?

Dont we already have a tutorial on the tween class?

Thanks!
Yes, I made that page and alll the tutorials on it. The only thing I didn't make was the logos for Flash and Photoshop. :P
thats what we need here...photoshop tutorials also...I could have like 20 ready to go in like a week....oh well...back to the topic at hand...any more tutorial ideas?

I haven't had the chance to use the newest version of Flash. One thing that has always given me grief during projects is trying to get an "outer glow" effect (similar to the one in Photoshop). I can do it with boxes, using a combination of linear and radial gradients. But....I've seen much more complicated outer glows on other websites. Is there a special technique to do this? ...or is it a capability of the latest versions of Flash? If it is a technique, I'd sure read a tutorial on it.
I've always handled all my glows with extra imported PNG's...never did it directly in flash...I'll look into that one though.

I've emailed Jesse and Strok and I have not seen them around for a while... :(

Yup... Absolutely lovely... Are you planning on distributing the script somehow??? :)
I was meaning to create one myself, but I never got myself finding time to work on it... Kinda sad and sucks... :(

I just tested loading a PNG into Flash and...it worked. I thought I had tried this in the past... and it didn't work. I just may take up headshotz invitation to the retard club.
They're probably busy with life...I've honestly never seen strok on here. I usually see Jesse late at night, which would probably be morning for him. In the mean time, we'll just keep making tuts...you have any ideas?
CyanBlue
11-17-2005, 08:35 PM
Actually Strok was busy creating a new layout for the whole site and I think he's still working on it right now... Jesse on the other hand... I think he's busy with lotcha girls... :D
browse thru all the first three pages of each forum.... any topic with 4 or more questions... ie preloaders, is a good candidate for a tutorial, unless we already have one.
good thinking tg....the preloaders...I dont know...oldnewbie seems to be the man with those....

I think he was refering to your flash scripts.
good thinking tg....the preloaders...I dont know...oldnewbie seems to be the man with those....
actually, preloaders was just an example of one of the many topics that get asked over and over again.... there are other topics, that may not have as much info out there, or someone as knowledgable on the topic as oldnewbie is on preloaders.

I personally would like to see an custom scroll bar for dynamic text that has easing. The current tutorial is very old (Flash5) and doens't have any easing. (and no masking).
probably something on using fonts in flash, and embedding fonts in flash.
CyanBlue
11-17-2005, 11:19 PM
Which script are you refering to?
I meant the whole tutorial site archtecture... ;)
I had tried this once and I didn't like it much so I was going to build my own and it never happened... :(
http://tutorials.flashvacuum.com/index.php
That's why I have this page... (Now you know how much I hated that script... :D)
http://tutorials.flashvacuum.com/tutorials/
As for the tutorial idea... I think it's got to be something that's been asked more than 100 times such as preloader or embedding font/mask or gallery or sound related questions... Something easy yet that can transfer basic knowlege rather than just copy/paste for their projects... That's my 2 cents... ;)
oh sound stuff....good idea..

I meant the whole tutorial site archtecture... ;)
I'm not sure I could write an very good tutorial on how to make a tutorial website. It's a mesh of Flash, XML, MySQL, and PHP. I could explain certain sections, but trying to explain the whole thing would hurt my brain....because I usually hurt it doing the database portions of websites.
Do we have any good tutorials on Flash --> MySQL communication? (I'm planning on writing one in the next few weeks.)

No we don't... I personally love to see more of the server side script & database integration examples... ;)
A good and easy start would be to track a user in a flash site. Flash -->server-->database.
CyanBlue
11-18-2005, 02:36 AM
I honestly think that would be an hard one to start... It's got to be something simpler...
Could take the Write to file one we just did and change it to save that data to a database...
CyanBlue
11-18-2005, 02:47 AM
That's one way to go... I'd keep it as is and create another one with more focus on the database integration part...
thats the idea...saving and reading names and emails from a database.. It covers database integration, as well as passing recordsets to flash....Or did you have something more specific in mind?
CyanBlue
11-18-2005, 03:01 AM
I think that's simple enough one to do/understand... I think the more focus should be put into the ASP/PHP section and database setup... Just my 2 cents... ;)
The ASP/PHP are the main component of it....I have a sample posted using ASP and MS Access.....I can definetly do the ASP MS database side, but I know nothing about MySQL.
CyanBlue
11-18-2005, 03:41 AM
Well... If you want, I can do that part but it is going to take some time for me to do it cuz I am really stomped thesedays... :(
I am sure there are lots of takers who's willing to donate their valuable time... If not, you know where to find me... ;)
Or worse, I might have to learn something myself.....
CyanBlue
11-18-2005, 03:54 AM
I personally think that's when the greatest tutorial is created... ;)
The bottom line is that this is something you've got to do when you have time... You should not sacrifice more than you are doing already...
I'm currently having creative block on the design of a site, so I have some free time..

Well. I use sendandload to communicate to my php scripts. I'm actually really new to a Flash end with database, but I've been doing database for normal html pages for a while.
As a start, I could do a tutorial on how to use sendandload to set session variables in php. I used it on a recent site to set a mute button on all of the pages.
I don't have any experience with ASP to Access. I'm best at PHP to MySQL.
I'm a total Microsoft guy...I had posted this example before.

I request a tutorial on using the Date Chooser in Flash. That little bugger is hard to figure out. Also, you could make it incorporate a database by pulling information from it when someone chooses a date.
(In the meantime, if anyone can tell me how (or point me to a link) to High-light several dates and not let them get de-high-light I would appreciate it).

Flash Gordon

That is why i requested it :D
well see, you can look into it, learn it, and write a tutorial for it.
Flash Gordon
11-18-2005, 07:46 PM
alright, if I ever can understand either the crappy date chooser or the link that cyanblue gave, I write some stuff....but that calendar that cyanblue gave has some extremely dificult AS coding: mind-blowing.
Its only code.....some one wrote it once, so it cant be that difficult anymore....:p

FG, I wrote a script that kinda inverts the dates in the datachooser component, it reads an array that's got all of the dates you want to mark, and any other date gets disabled... I'll PM you so you can write the tute
:D - Ruben
PS. I would write one myself but I'm just too freakin busy, sorry cota and FG ;)
So far here's the list of tuts I'm going to attempt to write
-Database integrations ASP/MS Access and PHP/MySQL
-Some MP3 stuff...just not sure what exactly
-A great mushroom chicken dish that takes 10 minutes to make.
CyanBlue

Somebody just posted this question and this also is fairly asked question...
How to detect the user inactivity...
Ruben
11-18-2005, 11:05 PM
Simple right? Just use onMouseMove to synchronise a variable to getTimer() its value and use setInterval() to compare and do something if it's been too long since the user last moved the mouse.
In addition you could use both onMouseMove and onMouseDown...
 - Ruben
Ok, so lets revise
-Database integrations ASP/MS Access and PHP/MySQL
-Some MP3 stuff...just not sure what exactly
-A great mushroom chicken dish that takes 10 minutes to make.
-User Inactivity.

One thing that has always given me grief during projects is trying to get an "outer glow" effect (similar to the one in Photoshop). There was this tute on a dutch flash-site about this one, it's actually pretty simple and you don't need to import any bitmaps nor do you have to use PS or anything for it...
Draw the shape you want to have a glow around;
Duplicate the layer and place the duplicate layer underneeth the original;
Give the shape on the duplicate the color you want the glow to be in;
Select the duplicate layer its shape and go to:
MODIFY > Shape > Soften Fill Edges...
Insert the size of the shape (Distance) and the amount of lines you want the glow to consist of (Number of steps) and don't forget to select Expand as your direction
...and that's pretty much all there's to it...
 - Ruben
PS. Do note that this will get you an artificial glow that truly only consists of shapes with different alpha's...

Hi everyone. Great thread you've got going here. Some quick responses.
Can we submit stuff to actionscript.org?
Indeed you can. Email me ( jesse @ this site ) for more information. Same goes for anyone who wants to contribute. We're setting up accounts in the new CMS and trialing it. Please email me.
CyanBlue....any word on re-organizing the existing tutorials?
CB mentioned this to me; I informed him that the new CMS (which we hope to have live by Xmas) allows for articles to be categorized into multiple categories at once. So we can have one tutorial structure which is navigable via skill level, like we have now, and another which is by Flash versions, and another which is by anything else that makes sense.
They're probably busy with life...
I've been moving house and switching job role. Strok has a family. Enough said :) Seriously though, we've both been overly busy but we're coming back onboard now to try and get some stuff sorted out before the end of the year. And though we've been quiet in the background we've still been working behind the scenes. Mainly formalizing AS.org stuff (financially, legally)... but also setting up some great new deals... no more information until we're 100% sure but keep your fingers crossed.
oh oh oh...I have my fingers crossed....oh and I want a pony for christmas...oh wait...you're not Santa....but really....I think for those that participated in this thread, and there are those that didnt, we're always willing to contribute what ever we can when we can.
I'm currently writting the database integration tutorial, and still looking for other tutorial ideas. So, lets keep it going.
I'm half way through writting the Database integration tutorial and its already like 5 pages long. Ah, the price one pays for knowledge...anyway, just to give you a heads up CyanBlue, I'll be sending you this one for a proof read.....:D
I just realized that there was a tutorial request section here...but its kind of empty....
CyanBlue
11-20-2005, 04:56 PM
Cool... Thanks, Cota... :)
well hell.....have to keep everyone involved...that and my brain is faster than my hands....which means mistakes...
I am posed with an interesting situation. While writting the Database Integration tutorial I have run into a bit of a wall. On the database side. Should I go into detail about setting up the database, creating the table, and creating the fields? Or, should I let setting up the database and creating a table fall under assumed knowledge. I'm worried that if I go into setting that stuff up, that would create a few extra pages of explanation specific to MS SQL, MySQL, and Access. Any suggestions?
Ruben
11-22-2005, 12:19 PM
Maybe find a compromis; like create sub-tutorials for the set-up fase of each type of database (mySQL, access, etc)? Which will not be listed in the main *big* list of tutes?
..how 'bout that?
 - Ruben
Maybe I could just link to some additional resources on setting up those databases....I dont know...I just dont want it to come across as lazy..
Ruben
11-22-2005, 12:56 PM
Yeah, but do keep in mind that one third of the readers will probably get put off by the idea of visiting an external (and thus unknown) envirement, the second third will agree with me saying that most tutorials actually suck d:ck (especially compared to those here on as[org] that rock hips).
So there's a really fat chance you'll lose 66% of the readers the second you tell 'em they have to go read up on essential info elsewhere...
- Ruben
PS. And don't think anyone would call you lazy even if you didn't write the db-part. F_ck that, I can see who started this thread and I think everybody else who's of the slightest importance here can see that as well...
I can go into setting up the database, but it will just end up being like 12 pages long...hope that doesnt turn people off.
Ruben
11-22-2005, 02:00 PM
hmm...I think it might, hahaha. What if you just first write down the steps you want to discuss (for yourself) and then write things out one by one (and try to keep stuff short).
I'm sure that wouldn't take 12 pages, would it?
...and for for instance the mySQL setting-up-your-server thing you could refer to some other site, or for that matter you could tell 'em to download xampp (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html).
:) - Ruben
CyanBlue
11-22-2005, 03:41 PM
Yeah... If you explain the process, the tutorial gets very fat and if you do not, your readers might not follow the process...
I'd do this... I'd probably show the screenshot of each process of setting up the database with minimal explanation and provide the link...
That way, the readers can still follow/finish the tutorial and they can go visit the link if they want to learn more...

Anyways. Feel free to use that code, and have fun breaking your brain on every possible combination you crazy NYC Cowboy

These tutorials really should get cleaned up. Look at this one
http://actionscript.org/tutorials/intermediate/launch_full_screen/index.shtml
on launching full screen window. Instead of have 150 lines of Javascript you can do all of that with System.capabilities."resolution" ......
It is for Flash 4! It is time to put thoses to rest. There are just much easier ways now.....
well my plate is getting full, so you'll have to take that one on..

Cota is right. All our efforts (I spent 10 hours last weekend alone) are going into migrating all the site's article content into a Content Management System, and customizing the system to suit our purposes. A user trial is currently underway... XXLM was the most persistent author at bugging me about getting his hands on it, so he's currently got an active account and is editing his own tutorials with the built in WYSIWYG editor.
For those of you who don't already know, this is why we haven't been (seeming to do) doing much else. About 6 months back we made a call on a CMS and spent heaps of time and effort migrating to it, only to find it had major security and other issues, and the whole effort was wasted. More recently we found another, did a detailed analysis and decided that it was the best for our purposes; while still imperfect. Since then I've been writing PHP scripts which port the data from the other CMS (which never went live) to the new one (due around January) which clean up the data along the way. I’ve also been writing processes and user guides to make maintaining the content as hands off for us, and as hands on for authors, as possible. Plus adding customizations to the CMS which add useful features for AS.org.
We're really hopeful that giving authors free access to maintain their own tutorials will lead to exactly the sort of clean-up operations being discussed here. Plus we have a few great ideas in the pipeline, all of which depend on the CMS. But our whole approach is "do it once, do it right" now, rather than doing stepwise releases of things as we have tried to do in the past; because often enough we don't get the time to do subsequent releases.
Threads like this are really valuable. If the content is out of date, or the same can be achieved in another manner, please let us know (perhaps wait until the CMS is live though, as we can’t do much until then). Also, we will be archiving older tutorials. The new CMS lets us assign tutorials to multiple groups so we can have a breakdown by user level (as we have now) but also one by Flash version, or anything else we so choose.
As I say, this is real and ready. The trial is live and underway. I'm just anticipating delays with Xmas coming up and me starting a new job in early Jan, so expect it by the end of Jan. (Oh, did I mention the site has been re-designed too? Or the new content we have lined up? The content creation incentives? Or our cool need idea for... stay tuned ;) )
Hey, were is my active account.....I want to play too...:(
Also, while you're here, did my tutorial meet your standards? Or do you have any suggestions for making them better..?
Jesse

Sorry haven't checked your tutorial yet. I can however activate your account. There's some paperwork first. Can't remember if you've filled it out already. Flick me an email and I'll sort you out. Same goes for any others who want to play.

Maybe we should make the posts in General Chat forum don't go up... What do you think??? ;)
I look at it this way. Anyone who's active in the general chat forums is pretty much an active member in other forums as well. Granted yes, there are a few who use general chat or site check to pad their posts, but its all useful...site check provides constructive feed back and general chat provides fun...so its relevent if you ask me.

Maybe we should make the posts in General Chat forum don't go up... What do you think??? ;)Noooooooooooo!!!! Hahaha, nah I'm with FG, it's not like it's a race or anything, and it'd be really pathetic if someone were to post solely for the sake of postcounts.. I'm also with Cota, if you're not really that much of an active member (and thus don't know many active members) than most of the time there's not much use to posting in the general-chat section...
Just my point of view though ...guess that pretty much says it all

I think of the postcount as just a way to show how active someone is on the site. I dont think it should change, not that it matters, but its a cool thing to have there.
I agree...its not really a measure of knowledge, but a measure of activity...though there are some members who arent as active as others, but contribute a lot in the way of tutorials, articles, etc.

Morg, I'd just been wondering this morning if there were any. What specifically would be useful?
Well, maybe a broad overview of what it is and some starter tips... You know like explaining to someone what root is and how movieClips work :)
I mean, writing it might not be such a big deal, but how do you actually use it in your movieClips? include "myFile.js" ? who knows...

anyway yeah, id love to learn about the XMLSocket objects.
I avoid sockets like the plague.......biggest headache I've ever known

I'd like to see some tutorials on the transition-classes that weren't discussed in the tween/easing class tutorial, for example the zoom-class, what are the possibilities/opportunities?

well the only reason im using sockets is because im trying to make a real-time multiuser application. i mean, is there any other way?!
Not that I know of...but I'm ok with never making a true multiuser application in flash...and if I ever have to, I'll just shoot myself.

well i guess that means no XMLSocket() tutorials... but its okay my dad just got me a book called "FLASHMX 2004 Actionscript - training from the source". a few years ago I learned flash with the same book but earlier version. this book has a XMLSocket section though. so i think ill be alright. then maybe I could write the tutorial.

I would actually be interested in writing a tutorial on connecting flash to MySQL through PHP to dynamically create content in flash. You can do cool stuff like galleries, shopping carts, and all kinds of stuff! and you never have to edit the FLA file to add items.
anyone interested?
Thats what I'm currently working on, its a 3 part tutorial for building an online catalog.

is there anything i could write a tutorial for? im a good teacher, and im feeling "the chirstmas spirit" so i want to give something.
Write a tutorial on using sockets...maybe a flash Instant messaging system or something along those lines...

falltimemusic - does your sig HAVE to flash like that... geez.... I can hardly read the posts... Dont get me wrong, its very nicely done particle system (Maybe post that as a tutorial ;)), but the Flashing...
I would just suggest killing the flashing part..
@Ruben - I would be excited about being a sherif, but they didnt give me a gun.

also in french "fiancé" is a guy and "fiancée" is a girl...
but maybe it reads that way in english for a girl...
or maybe he is a fiancé.

I'm a guy, so if my future wife is a girl (haha) then im supposed to write it as fiancée? i'll have to change that then. (i took french in high school but don't remember a thing)
Oh yeah, and I wrote a particle system tutorial and sent it in, so hopefully i'll hear back on whether that will go on or not.

Go ahead and start making one, but dont send it off to Jessem, wait until the new CMS system comes out...things will be easier in that regard.

i sent in a tutorial i wrote but i haven't heard anything back yet! hmm, well hopefully hear about something soon..
If you sent the tutorial recently, chances are you wont hear back until the new CMS system is rolled out. As it stands now, Jesse has to do everything manually, once the new system comes out, we can add the tuts ourselves.

Thank you for the post. These are really useful tutorials. I am however having some trouble with the php file. Can someone post the actual code that they have on the file to make it work for them? I am trying to send an email to blastattak@hotmail.com. I'm a little slow today......
Thank you
