I think we have to see chat examples to know what we should and should not do with the "Actionscripts chat proyect"

here is one that i found (didn't try it, i was the only user ther) but i liked the "mood" faces and the skins...

chat (http://www.pipey.com/chat/chatroom.asp)

if you found some chat , post it here, and of course make some comments.

okee-dokey smokey chickens...

moock's chat (http://www.moock.org/chat/client.html).

Pinkaboo, Squirrel and I gave this a whirl. Pink summed it up quite well by saying it lacks "LIFE".

Haven't checked out the above but will...

You can download Pipey's chatroom

here (http://www.pipey.com/chat/default.asp)

Apparently it's not a full version but might be worth looking at. Works with ASP.

Also don't forget PenguinChat (http://www.penguinchat.com)

Here's another downloadable PHP Flash Chatroom (http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/13178.html)

And here's a guy who's entire directory (http://digitalspace.hypermart.net) is wide open. That's always fun. There's .swf in there to look at.

It looks this is a good source for exactly what we're doing AND it's right on the front page of thsi site!

http://www.friendsofed.com/books/studiolab/multiuserweb/index.html

they reference http://habbohotel.com/ right in the description.

i wonder about high overhead stuff like this...anybody tried it yet? sems that it's pretty active. you could sell advertising space in a very intresting way here...

Looks great ! In chat graphics as advertisements ... hmmm ... subliminal messages ... *buy Actionscript.org merchandise ! U know u want it !* :)

Those environments are cool and good for impressing people but in terms of what we'r ecreating this for I don't think they're so practicle.

red penguin
02-14-2002, 01:31 PM
Yeah, those things have a short life span...at least I think...They aren't practical at all for what's going on here. It's the community we want to build. It's a place you wanna be...A lot of those others, you are there less than 5 mins and are bored of the novelty...

pinkaboo
02-14-2002, 01:38 PM
yep I got bored of being a penguin mondo quickly, imagination is much more powerful, I mean the @desc on squirrel's beast can provide a much more unique experience anyway. A graphic could never capture the vision I see when I read Vilehelm's description!

(although Ricod one could always add your chat ads as posters in offices and things so when people @look they get an ad message (product placement!) along with the rest of the blurb.)

Yeah i agree, this is the third or fourth one that i've seen like that.

However i was thinking this morning, and i'm sure 20 has been mulling this over, that a multi user "chronotrigger type" game might have a niche out there. Don't know it's interesting to think about. Flash might be able to handle something like that...Certainly shockwave...hmmm.

You have the basic abilities of a chatroom mixed with a game. Holy crap how has pokemon not picked up on this! It could be a huge idea...gameboy level graphics...mixed with a chatroom...selling advertising the whole way...(does best homer simpson imitation mmmmmm advertising dollars).

project #2???

I oft thought the same thing. Why no multiplayer network games out there for stuff like Pokemon? No idea. Had a concept like this in the works a while back using my engine and some ideas from Monster Rancher and such. The only thing that stopped me was the thought of making 500+ card graphics. Heheheh... might pick that up again some day soon.

vilehelm
02-14-2002, 06:56 PM
My only thought is that kids + online networks would scare the hell out of some companies and parents...(i can see a big sign that says "child molestsers welcome") which is why i suggest that it not be a kid's game.

pokemon as a card game is a little more directed at kids than most of them.

the habbo stuff is the best chat i saw, a lot of good graphics and stuff, but...
to do anything besides chating, you have to pay!!!, and i guess, the objetive here, is to have fast contact with each others, not to make bussines, well, at least not between us, just to make AS.org grows!!!, or not?.

vilehelm
02-14-2002, 08:41 PM
well, yes and no. we want as.org to stay open for business that's why i added the ad space. this hopefully serves both purposes of creating a great environment for our little troop and any newcomers, and as another stream of revenue for AS (albiet a small one but every little bit helps...right). didn't know you had to pay for stuff on habbo...that sucks...hmmm.

Ricod

:D I was thinking about a multiplayer flash game lately (Just finished chronotrigger again) and wanted to do some test stuff as soon as I get my home pc up and running again (defect motherboard, still waiting for the new one to be deliverd)

I guess having over 500+ enemies is not gonna be a problem ... lotsa animo I figure ... (also, gives me a chance to finally do something I'm good at, instead of all this IT stuff)

Maybe something to do when this chat ap is in its beta 3 fase ?

Oh, and they were mostly there due to the fact that it was on MM site of the day...

I posted it cause sometimes you gotta see everything. (figured it was well programd too) i had no problems using it on my mac, but something about it made me feel really stupid. stupid, stupid, stupid. I think it disables the user's imagination. felt weird -- impersonal.

When i was in the actionscript chat, i had the descriptions providing the images along with my imagination. Drinking with pinkaboo and red was fun, even though i had no real beer -- next time ill be ready. does the flash chat plan to be very visual. I need to see the others and find out what the actionscript flash chat is called. does it have a name yet? i'm excited to see how this turns out.

where's the orange vile? I see red, green and blue but no orange! *shrug*

K

vilehelm
02-26-2002, 01:59 PM
I think that they just changed it. The first time I went there it was blue with an orange box in the middle, then when i went back it was different. I managed to sign in and then it gave me a warning that it was running a script that was causing everything to run slow...then it pooped out completely...

Vile swagged the book I was going to review before FoE even managed to MAIL it to me. Sheesh... lucky bastich. Anyhoo, before my server crashed and the engine went down in flames I caught Vile and Red discussing www.dubit.co.uk which I checked out. Very cute site. It sports animated avatars in a multi-user environment. Movement and interface seems a bit cumbersome, but overall it is the best avatar-driven chat I've seen to date.

We could do better

*AHEM*

Anyway, I like the idea of these avatar-based chats and it WOULD be cute... BUT how could someone post up questions about code and stuff? Ehhhh... not easily, would be my guess.

Text-based is the way to go, especially considering the capabilities for of the engine. Anyone who has witnessed the @paste command in action knows what I mean (all two of you).

So that's my take. Check out www.dubit.co.uk cuz it's neat. The art is neato and the concept is downright spanky.

vilehelm
02-26-2002, 10:26 PM
Luckily I leaped to saftey as 20's server imploded...and am here to report on dubit.co.uk

It is a cute,IMMENSE site but ultimately it's purpose is so obviously commercial that i didn't find it that appealing. It is skewed towards 11-17 year olds though. The main thing that annoyed me was that your chat bubble would get in the way of eachother. and you could walk over another person's bubble.

I guess that they assume A. Teenagers only speak in short choppy phrases (they may) B. less talk = more shopping...

But apparently it is a flash environment

Also checking out

www.worlds.com

someone at work directed me to it.

red penguin
02-26-2002, 10:28 PM
Yeah, that place is huge !!

What happened to the engine, comrade?

Why can Vile c'n'p but I can't? Is it a WIN thing? I've looked at Jesse's code to enable it, but I seem to have problems...Is this due to HTML??? I can copy, but when i try pasting in the output field, whoa nelly, it looks like some alien language!!

pinkaboo
02-27-2002, 10:45 AM
I guess that they assume A. Teenagers only speak in short choppy phrases (they may)

From working on a Teenchat channel I feel it is true to say that 99% of the conversations consist of 4 key phrases:

1. any 1 wanna chat?
2 press 666 to chat
3. 666
4 asl?

It's just SOOO exciting!

Heheheh... good one, Pink. *snicker* Can't agree more. That's the one MAJOR drawback to those avatar-based chats. I can't go into my enormous diatribes about inanity. And could you imagine trying to answer a code problem on THAT? Oy vey.

The engine went down shortly cuz my uncle was trying to change the IP address of lonewolfe... so we'll need to make appropriate changes to the client when he completes the change. I'll let ya'll know on the appropriate thread when it all goes down.

vilehelm
02-28-2002, 11:20 AM
OK www.worlds.com SUCKED!!!

It was a java based 3D app that you could run around in...right up there with the original DOOM except you couldn't blow things up.

however...

A mod of the Unreal or Quake engine converted to a chatroom? hmmm...

You follow these simple steps...

Proclaim your undying allegance to Actionscript.org
Say you like my footers... and say it like you MEAN it
Ask me really nice for one

It's my plan to have an office or apartment for everyone who spends more than 10 minutes on the engine... PLUS, as an added bonus I'm making a bar.

Ricod

I think they should make a comeback starting here. Disco vibe, groovy lights, chat, good times, rolling around, all at once - Fantastic! - please Mr Squirrel - please?

Hi all,

I noticed some talk of Dubit so I thought you may be interested in some other projects by lightwave

This (http://www.virtualibiza.com/) is the newest one and it's a bit more "mature" than dubit

There is also this (http://www.contactsandpersonals.com) which used to be obsenely hilarious but now not as funny (yet quite functional)

Anyone know of any open source stuff for this sort of thing? hehe

The more that I look at things I think that massive multiplayer version of the Sims is going to destroy all of these ;). I know sorta like comparing grapes to watermelons but...Can't wait to see how that game comes out.
