View Full Version : Addition to forums ideology?

Here is a "LAW" I have stumbled upon which I thought we might like to adopt in an unofficial manner... Came about from some recent threads and I have seen it creep back in a few times...
Vote and opinions welcome...
heheheh
read Godwin's Law (http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/html/entry/Godwin's-Law.html)

Can you explain in your words what the ideology is - that site description is a bit vague - or maybe I just need to go to bed!

I quote from the linked page listed above...(why didn't the URL tags work?...)
Godwin's Law prov.
[Usenet] "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one." There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. Godwin's Law thus practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups. However there is also a widely- recognized codicil that any intentional triggering of Godwin's Law in order to invoke its thread-ending effects will be unsuccessful.
Oh, and a codicil is[list=1]
Law. A supplement or appendix to a will.
A supplement or appendix.

because you forgot to close them perhaps?
(or rather the end ] is in the wrong place, I don't know, call yourself a moderator!)

that's nazi talk...
I think what Red is saying is that when a thread is really going in a stupid downward flame spiral that somebody interject with "nazi" and that the the thread will come to a nice firey end...at least that was my interpretation.
please see poor joke at begining of this post, thank you.

yeah I'm with you on ideology as a concept - I just couldn't quite grasp the purpose of using this particular one on the forums. Maybe I'm just a little slooow.
Anyway I think your interpretation might be correct - although I kind of like that the forum threads run to their natural (if sometimes obscure, bizarre, depraved etc.) conclusion.

Is this thread heading towards the whole "Life-Death" thing ? Alas, poor Red ! Nothing that started is eternal, not the universe itself ... It's a good thing things end ... never ending stories are seldom interesting ...
ehm - back to 'normal' me - Often threads lead to different discussions, which I like ! heheh ! How many times haven't we started about ... arghh ... Now I'm doing it myself !

For Example
"HEy Rico got an AVITAR!" What the hell is it? Look like sonic the hedgehog with wings...

So is this law stating that it would be best to limit the size of a thread or is it saying that we should lock a thread down once it starts to get ugly? I've had the good fortune of not seeing any flames on here, you people sure play nice... not what I'm used to. Heheheh...
And I tend to ramble, as any would attest, so if you wanna lock down threads that go off-track then... uh... crap, I'm doomed!
And Vile, RicoD's avatar is MegaMan character. Dunno the name but my son about had a cow when he saw him. *grin*

This thread was spawned due to a few people who were attacking the penguin personally. I had found this and thought I'd just show y'all in good spirit. I think this law is used more on sites where discussions are more than just scripting....But, the next time I see it in practice, I will be locking the thread...
Nothing personal, the penguin just don't like getting hate mail...

You got hate mail from someone HERE?! Sheesh, all my grand ideals about how nice everyone is have been shattered! I've only had that happen ONCE and it was settled in a heartbeat.
I don't blame you on that, though. People who take to flaming need to take a step back... this is just a freak'n forum, for the love of cashews! Don't get all serious!
I go by the Jim Rhome school of adminning - Make your take, do not suck. If you suck, you will get rolled.
Wonder why there are no players on my engine?! CUZ I BANNED THEM ALL!!!
Just kiddn'... mostly... heheheh!
I'm of the mind that if a thread turns sour it should be locked down. If necessary the moderator(s) of the forum can step in and tell everyone to shut up and play nice.
This is especially true for a forum like this - where it's a community discussion on Actionscript, not debates over communism versus capitalism. There's no reason for people to act like pricks... at least, not if you want help.

It was me! It was me! I'd admit it!! I'm so ashamed. I said that he smelled like sardines and I couldn't stand it anymore...
I've since learned the error of my ways. I will be more tolerant to those who are olifactorally challenged...Red, will you ever forgive me??

I seem to remember that this is the thread that started it all:
http://www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=8893&perpage=15&highlight=nazi&pagenumber=1]around the beaten track thread
so I assumed that that was the impetus for this little ol' thread of Red's, but now I'm curious, Red, is that thread the germ or did you get unrelated nasty personal messages too?
No thoughts on the Law?
and Pengie, the notion is an interesting one, but then most threads would be sooo boring cos they wouldn't go to all the weird places that make these forums so great. (waving at ya 20 Ton!)
why didn't the URL tags work?...)
hmm, you're right, only come across it like this on this thread but the auto formatting doesn't seem to be using the right code. My apologies comrade.

See, it wasn't just me, Pink?
Yeah, I did get some 'stick' fro the people there. I was the only curious one...the conversationalist...Everyone else was just silent Bob on me..
well the lil BLEED is confused
doesn't seem to me that anyone took to much grief in that thread (is that the thread ur talking bout). k nazi's was mentioned but it was all in good taste wasn't it?????
would have been a shame to lock down the thread at that point because it seems to get back on track and peeps learnt from it?

Well, I could always start ragging on you if you want to relive it here.?.?
.oO(I'll do it)
I have to say though after hanging out on some of the forums for Unreal Tournament Editing this whole community is a million times more civil than those little turds. I tknow that i've said this before but we all get along pretty famously here i think.
ok everyone hates Red but that's to be expected, he's short and he's smelly.

I'm surprised to hear that you got some crap on this forum Red- I've been pleasantly amazed at the quality of content and behaviour here. I belong to a few other newsgroups (not Flash related) and the slanderous, abusive, negative, petty, futile and inane rubbish that is displayed every single day on those lists is amazing. Wading through hundreds of crap messages (not even counting the crossposted "see XXX pics of your grandma" type messages) just to find what you want can become very tiresome. We are very fortunate to have such an active and enthusiastic group participating here. You are all part of that - so reach around and give yourselves a good old pat on the back..... creak..crack...ow!

Seriously, I agree with y'all...it's good to point those things out!
AND I'm off to take lessons on bathing...doh!..I think I might be in the wrong country for that!
