combo box not working

I have a combo box in a .swf that is being loaded into a base .swf. I am unable to get the combo box to work unless I create an instance of it in the base.swf My project is quite extensive with several dynamically loaded swf's and class objects.

I have test this situation in a simple version and there is no problem, does anyone have any suggestions as to what would make this problem occur in my project?
