how to create this menu system ?

How would I create a menu system like the one found here: http://www.imagomilano.com/...
notice what happens when you mouseoff the menu. when you go back (mouseon) the menu defaults to the current selected menu item.

you can use the Movie Clip Tweening Prototypes at http://laco.wz.cz/tween/ for the animation and elasticity of each menu button and when the animation is over, using a variable, you can know where the user last clicked

that makes sense... i guess I dont know where to begin.
I dont care much for the elasticity.. (although I do like the expansion of the sub cats.) my main concern is the variable. Is this just a simple button inside a mc? To be honest, I'm a flash newbie..
An .fla would be awesome if you have any directions...

the menu system got my attention so i'm making a sample file for you; i just need to add the 'last selected' feature and i'll post the file but you will need to download the extension from the webiste i showed you.
