Hi,

I'm not exactly sure where to post this but here seems to be the best place. If not let me know ;)

Here is demo of the facial expression system I’m working on as part of a Flash game project. There are only a small number of expressions demonstrated here but hopefully it gives you a basic idea of what is possible. I am trying to develop a system where I have a high level of control over the facial features and that is also capable of performing smooth transitions between a variety of facial expressions. I’m quite happy with the results so far but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

The interface is pretty basic but it’s not really what I wanted to focus my attention on as it is just for demonstration purposes. There are still a few facial features that need to be implemented such as the nose, etc. The system is for a “Virtual Pet” type game I’m creating.

The body in the demo is just there as an example and is not the style that will be featured in the game.

Here's the demo http://www.deviantart.com/view/27275905/

There is an earlier version which is pretty much the same except a few superfiial changes. http://www.deviantart.com/view/27188537/

Any feedback good or bad is appreciated!

This is my first real time developing in flash so be kind

More to come...

Looks neat to me! I'd like to see a little random blinking or eye movement...

Thanks. Blinking and Eye movements should both be featured in the final version. I've been working on both of them but I'm not yet happy with the eye movements yet. I've got an example http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/27381208/ with blinking I made whilst experimenting but it was just a bit of fun.

I agree, very kewl. Cant wait to see the final. I would suggest that you vary your line wieght so that it gives more character.:D

i'm very impressed. i can't wait to see the final product

this seems a lot like the kind of project i would work on. one of those "why didn't i think of that?" things i guess.

good luck!

Love it mate. Especially clever how you can go from any one expression to any other.

Thanks. I may experiment with the line weight when I get some time. The initial plan was to use no lines at all but as the face style changed lines became needed.

Thank you :)

Thanks. Yeah the face is pure AS. My first attempt involved using a mixture of drawn shapes and AS but I just wasn’t happy with the results. I’ve got some examples of them in my stuff on DA if you want to have a look.

Cheers. That was one of my main aims when I started this and I’m pleased with the results so far.

I’m glad people like it. Hopefully I’ll have some more stuff to show soon.

Here is something I was working on for my project until this element of the game was scrapped
Creature Pose http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/27962796/

This was being worked on back when the creatures were planned to look something like this
Example 1 http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/27359860/
Example 2 http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/27360296/
