View Full Version : Open Type fonts not available cross-platform

I've noticed that some open type fonts are not available for cross-platform use in Flash.

Example, I've been using a Frutiger font, which is open type. On Windows PC's, the font cannot be used in Flash, but on the Macintosh versions, it can.

Has anyone seen this before, or is it a known issue? And if so, is there a solution to the problem?

Thanks

Howdy and Welcome... :)

I don't think you can use that type of font in Windows/Flash... I think it only recognizes TTF format files...

In fact, OpenType was supposed to be the cross-platform answer to TrueType. Whereas TrueType fonts come in either Mac or Windows format, and can't be shared cross-platform, OpenType is meant to contain attributes that make the same *.otf file installable on both Windows and Mac OS systems.

However...different applications handle OpenType differently. For example, Photoshop can work with non-Roman alphabet OpenType fonts, whereas Freehand cannot. Also, Windows98 and earlier, and MacOS 9 and earlier require Adobe Type Manager to be installed in order to use OpenType.

It could just be that Flash isn't equipped to handle cross-platform OpenType fonts. This will eventually change, since Adobe is committed to having all its products fully support the OpenType format.

If you actually import the font into your Flash file, does it still not work on a Windows system?

Hello again,

Thanks for the replies. Glad to know that it will be solved in the future.

It does recognize the OTF-fonts, but it doesn't recognize all of them. I can use the light, roman and ultrablack fonts, but not the bold, italic ...

I've tried it out, and it doesn't seem to work...

Thanks again for the replies,
