Have a look at www.soulwire.co.uk (http://www.soulwire.co.uk/)

Its a personal site to showcase an illustration / design portfolio. Any feedback would be welcome. For example, it needs Flash player 8, I have written javascript to detect this and tell the user to download or proceed, but not sure if all browsers like it. (only tested firefox and ie)

Any comments would be much appreciated, you can use the guestbook or contact from and let me know if you have problems as its still in testing really.

Thanks for you time ;)

Does NOT work in FF 1.0.7 FP 8 XP sp2

it is your detection most likely.

Hi,

Thanks man. I have no propper testing platform, but had my suspisions. Ive modified the script, see if it works now. If not, do you know of any cross browser detection scripts? this is based on the macromedia one.

Thanks for looking, hope you can get through to the main site this time...

Hi there,

So what browser / Flash player version are you using? Whats you connection speed?

Yep, I've got the black screen too. If I'm not mistaken, Headshotz and I are both on macs. I'm using the latest version of Safari and Flash Player. Connection speed: eleventy gb/s.

I also just tried it in FF. Doesn't work either...but you already knew that.

Getting nothing on Firefox either.

Yeah, Im on a mc now too. Its the javascript I used to embed the Flash I think. Im trying to make it SEO friendly so I took all the crap that doesnt validate out of the page. Ill rewrite the script tonight.

Thanks for the troubleshooting guys, Ill test it tomorrow and let you know. ;)

Right! Would you chaps mind doing a quick test on your macs. Safari really doesnt like my JS. I have no idea why. I wanted to take the Flash out the page so the horrible tags for IE dont cause it to invalidate. Ill have to put them in for now I guess though.

Hope that clears up the debugging. Let me know what you think of the site or if its still playing up.

Cheers.

Um...why have you (or someone else) been voting this thread as 4/5 stars? The site doesn't even work

EDIT:
it actually works now, it just takes a while for the preloader to show. The site requires lots of CPU, it makes my box run very hot, which means it will not show up well on older machines. But it does look pretty good, althought I can't read the fonts.

I have never rated a thread in my life on AS.org.

I didnt realise you could...

Thanks for the help FG and Headshotz.

The site doesn't even work

Only problems on Macs - I have no ability to test during dev, I rely on you guys to tell me. I sorted it as quickly as I could.

If a proffesional company is using a chugging old machine and a tiny monitor, they're probably not that good. People still design for 800 x 600 resolution etc. I realise people still use these settings, but people in the design / illustration industry? This is who the site is aimed at.

Ill look into converting the font to something larger though. Thanks for all your pointers, Ill keep working on it.

....i think what FG sais has to do more with how you deal with all the tweening you do. You have different things tweening at the same time, which will take (and takes) loads of CPU. My machine is fairly fast and still crashes a bit. I think a solution would be to give an order to the tweenings instead of doing all of them at the same time.

i mean, it seems to me that you dinamically mask, change alpha, scale, move, slide, and perform a series of color transformation all at the same time, plus the text display effect which is really cool, but doesnt show smooth untill the rest is done...

Hi goliatone,

Yeah, true, there is a lot going on at once!. I have a delay parameter inside my config XML which handles the spacing between tweens. Ill try making the delay a bit longer, though as you say its the text effect that does a lot of the slowing down. Ill look into initializing it once the tweens are complete, or before they start.

Thats strange about the menu. Ahhh, no i see now, if you rollOut of the form then back over it shows the menu. I have a timeout going on, but Ill add an if statement for when the form is open.

Thanks for the advice matey, I really appreciate it. I was being a bit arrogant about the CPU too, sorry, my computer is a beast and I take it for granted ;)

Thanks again, Ill ammend asap.

still, really good work...and that you can handle your tweens via Xml shows there has to be some nice code into your site. Nice

cool...ok, i guess it would depend in a few things. how old are you? how long are you staying? tryp with friends or you couple?

you have a wide range of things, from night-life, to culture, nature to sports or just walk'round...
