Great news for people who are interested in high end 3d packages, but can't afford it. Alias Wavefront has made a Personal Learning Edition of Maya 4 complete. It has all the features of the regular Maya 4 complete, but adds a watermark to the rendering and no plug-ins. But ... its totally free (and legal) ! Download at the aliaswavefront website (when it gets up again ... at the moment its down, but will be back soon)
Show me ! (http://www.aliaswavefront.com/freemaya)
*note for those who don't know what Maya is : Its a 3d authoring package used to model and render 3d content. At the moment its the most used in cinema (Square uses it for their famed movies and in game models/backgrounds)

Good news, but I seem to have missed the boat. I'll keep checking to see if they put the link back.
Thx :)

Eidos also used Maya in the making of titles like the Legacy Of Kain series... truly awesome games. I'll have to look into that learning edition thang. Very cool.
if your keen on downloading a learning version of maya i'm assuming you wanna learn it moreso out of interest than professional work. in this case you probably dont want to shell out the bulk $ for the good guides/manuals. check highend3d forums (http://www.highend3d.com/boards/) for a bit of help. unfortunately maya occupying the mega$$$ end of the software spectrum, simple newbie questions aren't always handled as patiently as around here.
nonetheless, this is pretty cool news. i think they used to offer 1month limited trial version of maya, which was possibly the most useless trial ever. in one month of maya most people would probably be able to draw a box and rotate it. ;)

Well, actually, I think they manage to make the hammer and door scene :) ! This is a smart move of Alias, cause its only companies they're targetting and the more people that can use it, the more companies will be tempted to choose for Maya ... It's about 30.000 bucks or so right ?
