remove movie clip

if ther is a movie clip, whose name is made up of (x + y + "1")
and if we make a variable a such that

var a = eval("_root." + x + y + "1");

how do i use the removeMovieClip action on the movie clip

a.removeMovieClip(), delete a does not work

a.unloadMovie() just unloads it not deletes it

is there a way to do this or do i have think of another way of implementing my stuff?

depends on how your code is layed out...

if a.remveMovieClip() has the same scope where you defined a, then it should work, if it is outside the scope of where you defined a, then you will need to refer to the actual instance name of the mc you want to remove, not temporary name you gave it.
